BMW 316I SE - Stick or Change - IANBMW

Hi, I am new to the forum but have been following various discussions over the years and very much enjoyed it.

I have a query I hope a few members may have an opinion on.

I have had a 53 Reg BMW 316i SE saloon since 2006 23k. It has now done 133k with a full BMW service history. Never really had any issue with it other than a coil pack failure at approx 60k. It is due an MOT in March and will require the following work:

I think it has a hole in the Exhaust back box, not sure if this is an issue or not, does not appear to create that much noise?

Requires the back brake pipes replacing. Cost £200 to replace the front at the last MOT. Advisory on previous MOT

Front suspension bushes have had it and need replacement.

Hand brake does not hold very well, not sure of cause.

It also some rust is starting to come through on various parts of the car, front wings, rear rings and windscreen piller.

So the question I have is should I get this work done. Not really sure of cost but imagine quite expensive. Or should I just part exchange it for a newer prob 09 - 59 Reg 318i se. Being offered approx 1k in part exchange.

Sorry for the length of my message.

I look forward to any thoughts and advice

Ian

Depends if you want to spend a little money or a lot of money ,100ukp for the two front wishbones with all the joints attached 2 hours max to fit, rear box 80ukps fitted the brake pipes I would see if they need replacing first, rear handbrake probably requires new shoes adjusters are under the centre console .

If you can afford it, go for a newer one before the MoT runs out. After all the repairs, the 9-year-old 316 might not be worth much more in PX than it is now, although you'd get a bit more if you sold it privately.

If it were me I'd be trading it in against something now. Its a 10 year old car and although the mileage is hardly dreadful it's still one of the least desirable versions of the 3 series with the poverty spec engine.

If it's starting to rust then don't bother getting work done. Sorting out the rust will cost more than a 10 year old 3 series is worth.

I agree with jamie about the rust. I'd trade your car in of I were you.

Get a couple of quotes for the repairs first. Cars I have changed as having ''had it'' being seen running perfectly well a few months or years later is quite embarrassing. A C220 diesel I traded in three years ago swept past me on the motorway the other week.

Hi

I just thought I would update the forum as to how I resolved my issue of whether to change my BMW 316i SE or not.

In March I bought a BMW 318I SE 58reg with only 17k at a VW Main Dealer. Full BMW Main Dealer Service History. Light Blue Metallic

Got a reasonable deal a bit of money off and 1K in part-exchange, only had 1 mths MOT at the time.

Only issue so far has been that the dealer changed the front tyres prior to delivery due to wear when doing MOT and replaced with non-runflat tyres.

Once I discovered this I had to arrange to get them changed at a more local dealer in the group to runflats. Thankfully they did not argue too much about this.

Other than this 4k trouble free miles.

Many Thanks to all those who posted their advice

Ian

Get a couple of estimates to remedy the faults before deciding. There is nothing more sickening than seeing your old car in good condition after you gave it away cruising down the road. The fact is as soon as you change cars the same old problem of ageing starts again.
