And I do not mean an Audi, I'm refering to a wolf in sheep's clothing. In far off days this would mean a supercharged Minor, or Cortina Savage( bigger engine in normal saloon).

I'd really like to buy a non-bling quick, grunty car, up to about 30k but with reasonable fuel consumption(30+), must have a nice ride and a bit of room. Estate would be fine, but not too big.Petrol or Diesel. The problem is that if you spec a decent engine with a new car you automatically get all the bling.
Don't want a sheep in wolf's clothing!

BTW, for those that are not of a certain age, the 'Q' stands for Question, as in what the ..... is that. I believe it was a term used in the 2nd WW for ships that looked liked Merchant Ships but were heavily armed, and gave the Germans a big surprise.

You're obviously not old enough - the "Q" ships originate from WW1 and code-named after their home port, Queenstown in Ireland, then part of the UK.

Blimey, first time for twenty years that i've not been old enough. Thanks for the correction.

A number of the premium brands don't get any extra bling unless you pay for expensive options - and they usually have a de-badge option.

That would be a Lotus Carlton then. Take off the spoiler and put some standard steelies from a Senator on and you have the ultimate sleeper. They made fewer than a thousand so proces are rising.

Has anyone got a 'Q' car? - Happy Blue!

The Original Audi S models (as in S4 etc) were real Q cars - debadged and with no chrome, they looked like anormal car until the pedal went down.

Hard to find a modern one these days, although given the outputs of modern diesels, a Mondeo with the 2.2TDCI (200bhp I think) might do teh trick, especially with all the gear added on.

An 850 or V70 T5 estate is a good Q-car, especially when de-badged

Q was also used in registration plates where the original documents were lost or not available I brought many Porches into the UK in the 90s and they were put on a Q plate.

I had an Octavia vRS TFSi estate, roomy, fast and 30mpg easily. Unfortunately it was in the bright metallic blue which told the world it was a vRS. I'd imagine a debadged silver one would meet the Q car criteria. Add an invisible remap to 250bhp and Robert's your mother's brother.

Citroen C5 3.0 V6 springs to mind - if you can find one.

The Vectra was available with a 2.8 V6 turbo. The Insignia/Saab 9-3 could be had with the same engine (155 MPH, 0-60 in 6.5 seconds)

Volvo S60R/V70R. New S60 T6.

I remember the Consul GT was regarded as a Q car. That had a 3.0 V6 engine with just 138 bhp!

How about the Uren Stampede from the mid '70s?

Based on a Capri, but did 171 and 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. I even wrote a song about driving one when I was 15 (don't ask).

Vauxhall Monaro.

If you could disguise the distinctive SBC burble (but why would you?) with a suitable exhaust system, no one would notice that innoculous looking coupe roll up beside them-until it left a pair of 100ft strips of rubber on the road when the lights changed. Geared to 45mph/1000RPM, 30mpg is possible during a cruise. You won't average more than late teens though!

If you could provide the log book of the car that the chassis came from then you could have a normal registration if you had a friendly tax office ,used to build kit cars in my younger days.I also ran a Clan Crusader and a bread van Europa (used to keep spare doughnuts in the car) both built from kits these had genuine history so no problem getting a plate.

Triumph Vitesse.

Muppets thought they were Heralds. Just don't lift off in a corner in swing-axle variants!

Has anyone got a 'Q' car? - Avant

The Vitesse - a car I always wish I'd had. My first new car was an MG 1300 in 1971, and on reflection I should have found a little extra for a last-of-the-line Vitesse, as the cornering was much improved on Mark 2 Vitesses.

I was tempted again to look for a restored Vitesse convertible four years ago when I found I could afford a 'fun car': but I'm no mechanic and I think I did better by getting the Z3.

I agree with Oldtoffee: my vRS estate looks fairly innocuous in white, although I don't feel strongly enough to debadge it.

You could get the Mondeo mk3 with the 3.0V6 in Ghia and Titanium models. This had a detuned version of the engine in the ST220 (200bhp iirc) but to a casual observer it could well be a 2.0 diesel or a 1.8 petrol.

e.g. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Mondeo-3-0-Ghia-X-2005-6-M...e

I know you wouldn't look at these twice with your budget, but the thread got me thinking....

There's quite a few. My thoughts below are quite wide based on costs and vehicle size but might give you some ideas and are in no particular order. If you like the engine then VAG seem to offer the same 200bhp 2.0T in lots of different group products. Apologies if I have got any bhp figures slightly out!

BMW 330i, 335i or 530i with SE trim. Sometimes only visible difference versus smaller engined models is the alloys - 272 to 306bhp

Any Volvo T5 - S40. V40. S60, V70 - in SE trim - 225 to 250bhp

Mondeo III 3.0 V6 or IV 2.5T - 200 to 225bhp

Vectra 2.8T V6 in Elite trim or ex police - 250bhp

Saab 2.8T V6 or equivalent Cadillac BLS - 280bhp

VW Jetta 2.0T FSi - 200bhp

Toyota Corolla T-Sport Compressor - 215bhp

Subaru Legacy 3.0R Spec B - 245bhp

Skoda Octavis vRS - 200bhp

Seat Leon FR - 200bhp

Mercedes C350 or E350 - 300bhp

Mazda3 MPS - 256bhp - actually a bit bling!

Jaguar X Type 3.0 V6 - 220bhp

Yes to the Mazda 3 MPS - very subtle indeed but boy do they go!

I'd add the 190bhp Toyota Celica to that and the Mondeo ST220. There's also the Honda Accord I-VTEC ES GT. That's the most subtle one - no badges on the back other that the one that says 'Accord'. Toyota MR2 Turbo? Mitsi Legnum - Ralliart version!

£4k will get you a 2006 plate 3.3l V6 Hyundai Sonata. It couldn't look any less exciting.

If you're looking for a new car, the Focus ST Estate has that nice blend of 'mummy enjoys racing out for the lights after dropping the kids off at school' going on.

I think BMW do 2 of the best, 535d which is hugely impressive, or 545i/550i which are seriously rapid. Get one without all the appendages outside and they are discreet too.

Dunno if they've been mentioned but the Mazda 6 MPS is a really fast car (0-60 in around 6.5 secs), pretty good on fuel (for the performance) and pretty innocuous to look at - in-gear performance is particularly strong. Another option from the Mazda stable is the 2.3T CX-7 - not as fast as the ridiculously fast 6 MPS, but the CX-7 will hit 60 in 8 seconds flat and looks like any other crossover type family car.

I too was going to suggest a Saab 9-3. I have recently bought my first Saab, a late 07 9-3 2.0T Aero and have had a Maptun stage 1 tune applied. It now does 30-90 in 10.5 secs. Very potent overtaking power, though it's not so good from a standstill as the tyres can scrabble fro grip if you're too vicious with that 360Nm!!

It looks like any ordinary saloon, but goes like the clappers. Handling is good, comfort and NVH excellent and returns 30+ driven conservatively. All the toys too (I'm a heated seat convert now!)

Given your budget you could probably afford a 2.8 V6 Xdrive version. Get that tuned a little and it would be a very potent machine. Equip it with Bilstein B6s from Neo Bros too.

Avoid cheap tunes though. i had one of those "mobile" tuners out and was very disappointed. Maptun or Hirsch for your Saab - expensive but worth every red cent!!!!

For me it would be a BMW 550i in SE spec or an Audi S4 without the bling.

Both in estate form can look like regular 2.0 TDI's (exhausts apart) and pack a mighty punch.

How about an Infiniti g37 sedan? I have one (on my second now). Never seen another one on the roads (only in the Infiniti garage), so a little bit different and no-one knows what it is. Looks nice, in an understated way, certainly not bling.

Best bit is the 3.7 petrol engine under the bonnet (same as in the Nissan 370Z) - beautifully smooth and very quick (sub 6 sec to 60). A very fast car which does not shout about what it can do!

Only problems - not many Infiniti dealers around, top band for road tax, and, realistically, struggle to get much more than 26 mpg.

Let me know if you want any more details.
