Honda Jazz 1.4 ex auto 2012 - Spacesaver wheel not provided. - Jazzyivtec

Shocked at the price quoted by dealers for supply of spacesaver wheel/tyre,. Even those on eBay are very pricey.

Bought a Rover 25/45 200/400 spare from a vehicle dismantler and it is imminently suitable for the job, does not foul the running gear and handles fine. Cost ……..£20.00 including carraige.

The tyre on the Rover wheel will probably be too old to be safe to use. Tyres should be replaced every 6 years even if they are not used. Did Rover and Honda use the same nuts/bolts, if they are a different type you will need to carry extra nots/bolts to ensure your safety and that of other road users.

You're not wrong - but who actually replaces their unused spare tyre at 6 years old ?

Come to that who replaces the rear tyres on a low mileage fwd car just because they're 6 years old.

It's UV that causes rubber degradation. Sitting in darkness it won't be exposed to UV, so the tyre life is almost indefinite.

It's UV and oxidation - tyres do last longer in the dark but certainly not indefinitely.

The rate of oxidation must be pretty low at boot temps-even in summer. OK, 'indefinitely' is an exageration. But the only spare tyres I've seen that looked cracked were old tyres that had been demoted to spare status when they became bald!

Careful!

My information shows the Rover wheel as having a 35-38mm offset, whereas your Jazz has 45mm. That means the rim and inside wall of the tyre could be a little closer to the centre line of the car. Also the centre line of the wheel/tyre will be a little offset from design. That could affect your steering under braking if you fit your spare to the front with an original wheel on the other side.

Very intersting but rather irreleavant compared to teh impact of using a spacesaver wheel vs a normal one..

ANyone who drives above 50mph with a spacesaver is a muppet anyway.
