What 1.6 diesel to buy? - like a boss

Hi all,

I've scrapped my idea of buying a Audi A3 and gonna buy a 1.6 diesel.

I do 500/600 miles a week and a 2010-2012 five door hatchback diesel fits my needs.
What's in important to me in reliability, fuel ecomony, looks and high spec.
Budget would be around £14000-$15000

I would like to hear peoples opinions on what type of hatchbacks are out there.

I'm not considering VW, Audi, BMW, SAAB, ALFA.

Thanks

Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30.

Basically the same car, Kia is a bit bigger and more comfortable, Hyundai a bit sportier perhaps.

Know more about the Ceed, great car. Get one that is MY10 onwards (post facelift with the "Tiger Nose"). For your budget you should be able to get one of the very last of the old models, might even get a new model ex-demonstator.

Kia has a 7 year warranty, its unlimited mileage for the first 3 years but after that its limited to 100,000 miles, at your mileage it will finish after 4 years. Hyundai is unlimited for 5 years. Make sure either has a full service history with receipts (preferably main dealer), applies to any car you buy in truth.

Engine-wise, I think HJ himself is keen on the fairly new Renault 1.6DCi, probably iftted on several different manufacturers' cars.

The peugeot, Citroen, Volvo, Ford and Fiat (?) is essentially the same 1.6 diesel.

Its an ok unit in manual form but it does have its problems.

Why a 1.6 diesel in particular?

Another vote here for the Kia or Hyundai for the warranty which in effect gives you the reliability you're after. Or if you want a better drive, a used Ford Focus will have depreciated a lot to get you a good car, high spec for the money if you seek out a Titanium X. Autotrader shows 2,871 less than 2 year old Focus, 1.6 diesels, 412 x i30s and 376 x Ceeds.

New shape Focus 1.6 TDCi

New shape Astra 1.7 CDTi

New shape Hyundai i30 or Kia Cee'd 1.6 TDCi

For reliability, maybe look at Mazda 3 (same as Focus engine) or Auris.

For value for money Megane 1.5 dCi or latest Citroen C4 (same engine as Focus again)

New Auris should be just about in budget, though will be a 1.4 Diesel.

Ugly duckling at last turned into er another clone hatchback, but you'll get the all important reliability and the backing of the maker who remembers who keep them in business, looks decent enough now.

If you could push the budget and get the Hybrid, you'll have a lovely quiet economical drive without having to go for a tractor engine...and not a DPF or DMF in sight.

I've no need for a 2.0L diesel anymore, cheaper tax and cheaper insurance.

Thanks for the replies, alot of food for thought. Will be searching the net now for diesels.

I do like the new Volvo V40 that is coming out.

Keep the suggestions coming!

Looking at the Renault Megane GT Line and it's getting good reviews on the net!
