Zetec 1.25, 2000 - Fiesta fuel pump - Neverwas

Car was left 4 weeks while owner away. Now fuel pump does not run for 1~2 secs when ignition turned on and car will not start . I have checked the fuse (31) and that the cut-out has not popped.

Which is the fuel pump relay please? (I cannot tell from the Haynes manual.)

Also, is there any way I can check that power is reaching the pump without dropping the tank?

If not, is it practicable to cut the wiring under the rear seat to check the voltage and then splice in a new piece of cable and shrink wrap to remake the connection?

If you lift the rear seat cushion ,you will see the wiring to the fuel pump/gauge sender where it passes through the floor to the tank.Open the plastic sleeving and locate the pump wire(used to be a black /red wire ) but could be different on this year.Test wire for power under cranking,if present then the pump could be at fault. The access hole needs to be opened up to gain access to the pump connector, rather than drop the tank ,which could involve removing rusty support straps and fittings.Pump relay should be R9 small black relay in engine bay fusebox.hth

Many thanks.

There is voltage in the pump wire (Violet/Orange in my evolution) but I'm not yet sure it is getting the full voltage. I find it hard to tell in the brief period it is live on switch-on and while cranking I'd expect the voltage to drop. I'd like to bypass the relay but I've so far failed miserably to identify the right relay. I'll get back to it today and identify the relay by pulling them in turn until the power at the pump disappears. (Why do the circuit diagrammes in the Haynes manual show relay a, relay b, etc etc when there's no plan of their layout and the auxiliary fuse box does not label them, only the fuses?)

When you say "The access hole needs to be opened up to gain access to the pump connector" do you mean just pulling out the rubber grommet or using a Dremmel or the like to enlarge the hole? I've heard of people doing the latter but it always struck me as brave and courageous.
