hi,

need some help and advice please

possible car is : VW golf mk5 gt tdi '54 with 106 k miles Fsh...to be included the 5 spoke Vw alloy wheels [retreated], cam belt change and full service [by dealer ]included in the rpice , in gunmetal grey inc . 2 zone climate and front arm rest.....

OR ... VW Golf gt Fsi 2.o 2004, 71k ..full leather, heated seats

history : 3 golfs so far ...last car gold mk4 gt tdi 150 highline with winter pack for the last 6 years, covered from 90 to 180 K miles.....being offered £1500 trade in ...averaging about 50 mpg i guess.

annual mileage is about 7000

being convinced that a Ford Focus zetec is the way to go at same price ? but at 50k miles , 1.8 petrol ..alot less to go wrong maybe ??

..my mechanic thinks im Mad to consider the Golf or any diesel in fact ...with DMF , turbos etc ????

what do you reckon ?? max budget is £5500 including my trade in @£1500

I think you'll find the general consensus is you need to be doing twice your annual mileage to make a diesel worthwhile.

The early 2.0 PD TDIs were affected with injector and oil pump failures were they not? Plenty of posts on here elaborating on those issues, e.g:

Perhaps the car you're looking at would have these problems, and be worth avoiding?

The 1.9 PD TDI is supposedly more reliable, although I understand later versions of this engine were also fitted with the failure-prone piezo-electric injector actuators.
