I have a mk2 golf driver 1.8L J'reg 1992. on a cold start the throttle sticks at 3500rpm, i have been told this may be due to a faulty waxstat, im not sure. And also if i make a short joruney when the car is acting this way, when i turn the engin off it keeps running(well splutering and backfire) for up to 30 seconds after taking the key out of the igniton!! please help as i havent a clue what this is. I love my golf and i want her to be a healthy one!!

Mark_uk,

You'd probably be better off asking this question in the technical forum. Give it a while and hopefully one of the moderators will shft it across for you.

Sounds like a typical waxstat failure - the running-on after you switch off can be caused by too high an idle speed. 2 schools of thought here:

1. The Pierburg 2E2 carburettor is a very complex device, but once properly set up will give very little trouble. A new Waxstat unit is around £30, easy to fit, and if the car is otherwise running fine, leave the Pierburg carb on it. if there are other problems, you can have the carburettor professionally refurbished and it will then be as good as new.

2. The Pierburg is an over-complicated, unreliable piece of junk and a source of shame for the whole German nation. There is no point in trying to repair it, as something else will go wrong with it next week. Bin it and fit a manual choke Weber replacement (£170ish).

I tend towards the second opinion, which is why my old 1.8 Golf ended up with a Weber, but others here would disagree.

I was given much bad advice on the PIERBURG E2 when doing an overhaul. I think I discovered why many people have a problem with it. It now runs like a dream high performance and fuel efficient carb.

I know it has been 16 years since this was posted haha so I won't be surprised if I don't get a reply.

I currently have this problem and have a couple ideas of what it could be.

Did you get yours sorted? If so, what was the problem?

Cheers

If the Weber conversion is still available go for it. I did this back in the late 90s with a 1.8GL that had the same symptoms and I spent a long time trying to get the Pierburg to perform properly. The Weber transforms the car. Manual choke, so complete control over the warm up cycle and twin barrel so economy and performance when required ( as far as 90 hp allowed ).

My car also had a GTI back box and went very well. Sold it to fund my first Audi ( 2.3 E quattro followed by an S2 ). Let us know how you get on....
