My 2009 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI has 92,000 miles. I have just had the DPF replaced by Ford.
I'm wondering are any products suitable for adding to the fuel tank to increase the life span of the new DPF ?
I've seen the cleaner additives but I'm unsure if they're any good ?

Cheers

92,000 miles is a good life for a dpf, many have problems way before that. Ford policy is to replace them as a service item at 72,000 miles which is why we don't drive Fords now.

Your car uses an Eolys addive which is automatically metered into the fuel, you need nothing else. In fact, some additives will damage the dpf.

Yes I know about how the Ford DPF system works. Most of my miles have been motorway journeys, perhaps increased its life.
When the 75,000 mile DPF change was imminent I asked a Ford mechanic about getting it changed, he said just wait until it stops working. I filled the Eolys again instead.

So it's not worth trying to extend the DPF life any longer than the recommended 75,000 miles ?

It's ash that clogs the DPF-it doesn't burn off like soot-snake oils won't do squat. All you can really do is make sure that you use a low ash oil.

Your type of use has undoubtably maximised the dpf life but it still annoys the hell out of me that Ford consider Eolys (spelt it right this time) and DPF replacement as service items at set mileages rather than consider the type of use the car gets.

As unthrottled says low ash oil is essential.

Ford and many other manufacturers have mostly switched to catalyst-coated DPFs that don't use a cerium fluid.

I've never been able to find what the intended service life of these coated DPFs is .... surely at some point the ash residue will build up to a critical level.

I think they must all clog up eventually. I suppose the service life must be a combination of the amount of oil and diesel burned rather than age or specific mileage.

Ok thanks for your replies.
Hopefully in the future, the replacement cost of a DPF will drop !

A few miles from where I live there was a small independant tyre/exhaust retailer that set up in the 80's. Still do the tyres/exhausts in the original "shed" but they now claim to be the largest manufacturer of aftermarket cats and dpf's in Europe in a large out of town unit.
