Nissan Pathfinder - clutch - kevinthegerbil

I have a problem with my clutch. First thing in the morning, I find my clutch pedal is halfway to the floor and I have to put my foot under the pedal and pull it back up. Lubrication of mechanical parts does not help. After driving for a while, the problem becomes intermittent, although there is never any evidence of the clutch slipping (about 65k on the clock). The guy who services my car is mystified and the same goes for me, having a fair bit of personal experience of working on cars in the past. He recently tried bleeding the brakes - I sat in the car to depress the pedal when asked. The engine was not running during the procedure but, the moment I touched the pedal, it went to the floor on its own. When asked to take my foot off the pedal, it would not return and took considerable force to lift the pedal with my foot. Once the pedal was lifted to its correct position, it operated the clutch normally, apart from not always fully returning. Almost like there being a permanent vacuum to the clutch slave cylinder. Does anyone have a clue what might cause this problem. I am a pensioner and I don't really want to go to a main dealer and pay their inflated prices, if this is a simple problem. Help!

Moved to Technical, but you might find the other Pathfinder thread (which raises wider issues so still in this section) worth a look.
