Citroen Picasso - Nightmare with repair costs/engine - needing help!

Car only done 40,000 miles and always been totally reliable. Passed MOT flying colours other than recommended new disc pads/brakes. Booked in for that the next week - prior to this the car flashed up "Engine Fault" and petered out. Top loaded into garage (have used before and it is the main dealer for Citroen in Surrey so normally v. reliable) ; looked at and "repaired" with a new starter coil. Had car back for an hour and same light came on, plus it put putted/huffed and seemed to have no oomph. Took back to garage; they checked out the cylinder by stripping it; said it could be starter motor and replaced that; also checked the throttle and cleaned it out. Had it for three days. It was returned on the Friday having been "extensively road tested". Drove no more than a few miles the next day when engine light came on again. This time the radiator also showed full temp/hot despite it being minus 10 and car not having driven far. Drove to safe place and it petered out again and would not restart. Rescue service guy said he thought it could be the gasket. Garage now telling me it needs a new engine, at 16 plus hours labour and goodness knows what cost (but defi a cost I can't afford!!) Any suggestions on recons/other garages etc. They are saying even if I source the correct engine that they will not give a guarantee (because it;s not new) and will also have to replace cam belt, water things and goodness knows what else "whilst the engine is accessible". HEEELLLPPP!!

Find another garage?

How they possibly think poor running could be attributed to a starter motor baffles me.

It could also be they omitted any anti-freeze, hence the overheating.

Thank you - I think they thought the starter motor because it wouldn't start once it had broken down. Yes, they did say the engine might have cracked, which I guess would be because of no anti freeze? Is it reasonable to expect they would have checked that earlier?

It does sound, from your description, that the engine has "siezed".

Second opinion time.
