Mazda 2 - 1L of engine oil in fuel tank?? HELP! - sarahliew

HELP! I've been a typical female and gone and put 1L of engine oil in my fuel tank by mistaking (was panicking when my car broke down for the first time in my life and wasn't thinking properly). I put in about 5L of petrol after realizing my mistake and drove about 5kms home with no problems. But after reading forums I now don't know if I should try and siphon everything out of the tank myself, take it to the mechanic to get it emptied or just top it up to full and keep driving it. Help please? :(

anyone who knows what to do, your help would be INCREDIBLY appreciated right now :( i'm in the midst of med school exams as well and this anxiety is making me really stressed. i'm a student so i want to avoid paying huge amounts but at the same time i want to avoid serious damage to my car

Nothing to worry about.Fill the tank as much as possible to dilute the oil.You may find the engine will smoke a little ,but no worse than a 2- stroke motor bike that mixes oil in the petrol.hth

thanks for the help :) should i really not even try siphoning it out? i wouldn't know where to get one with the valve on the end though so that you don't have to suck to get the petrol flowing

It'll probably just smoke a bit. Make sure you fill up your petrol tank. You might get cacked up spark plugs so be wary of that. Sounds like you haven't put enough in to cause big probs and it's a petrol car and not a diesel (diesel + oil in tank = worse!)

Also, I object to the 'typical female' comment. I'm female and I've never done that ;-P
