I have a 2002 corsa c 1.0 12V Z10Xe engine with 96000 on the clock. Over the past six months the oil level has not dropped at all on the dipstick (touch wood), but i want to know if the piston rings are likely to start to fail soon due to the high mileage of the engine. I usually rev upto about 3000rpm when changing gear and cruise in fifth at between 2500 and 3000 rpm, only going upto about 4000rpm on the rare occasions that i venture onto the motorway. How long should the rings last and is this high mileage bad for such a small engine?

It is quite a fragile engine by nature and needs appropriate maintenance to keep it running, but seeing yours is using no oil at 96,000, it must have been well cared for.

There is no reason to suppose that there is any undue wear to the piston rings and with good maintenance the engine should last indefinitely.

The definition of good maintenance with these engines? Mine is 5w-30 fully synth and new filter every 6,000 miles. Weekly check on oil and coolant levels, and look for leaks.

I would agree with the above, I think a lot of the problems with modern engines are due to the extended oil change intervals.
