I have had a Hyundai Getz 1.3 GSI automatic for the last four years. I am the second owner, the car is a 2004 model, and has only done 33,000 miles. It's a nippy little car, but it drinks petrol as if there was no tomorrow. It is regularly serviced, and for much of the time I use it for local runs with the odd long distance trip of 80 to 120 miles. I am lucky to get 25mpg on short runs, and the long distance trips hardly make any difference. I am not heavy-footed -- I had a Toyota Corolla 1.3 automatic (with a three speed gearbox) for ten years and the mpg never fell below 32 and long trips returned 36 to 40. Our local trader has (reputedly) checked the car several times, but the answer is,as always, that they can find nothing wrong. I have tried adding various injector cleaners to the fuel tank, but there has been no perceptible improvement. It's getting a bit of a drag now, with the price of petrol continually rising, so any suggestions of tackling my problem would be much appreciated.

Kind regards to all

Copperwheat

Has it always been this poor throughout the whole four years you've owned it or is it a problem which has developed recently? It doesnt sound like theres anything specifically wrong with the car but a small engine with an automatic gearbox generally will use more fuel than people usually expect. It has to work very hard (that 1.3 was replaced not soon after your car was made with a better 1.4) and the autobox only adds to the problem.

Its very low mileage as well for its age and that leads me to suggest its primarily been used as a retired persons runaround, trips of under 2 miles on a cold start being very common i would suspect which wouldnt of done it many favours. Im not surprised it doesnt improve that much on a long run, an underpowered car like that must be straining along at motorway speeds, i was in a 1.1 Fiesta automatic a few years ago which sounded like it was fuelled by sandpaper and gravel at 65 it was working so hard.

My 3.0litre S-Type automatic, much heavier, bigger and more powerful than the Getz can match that sort of fuel economy, or even better that at times. Im not sure what to recommend, a change of car could be a good idea if financially viable but then theres the costs of that to take into account and on your mileage it could be a long time before you get 'in the black' as it were following your investment.

Jamie, My father in law has the same model Hyundai with exactly the same problem. We looked into it (the fuel consumption) a few years ago when he bought it from a main dealer. The claimed official fuel consumption was not all that good, and the actual was no where near that! I remember that the car fuel computer was calibrated in U.S gallons and when you applied a conversion factor, the figures improved. However the figures still remained poor by comparison and still do. My father in law still has the car and is not too bothered about the consumption as he does a very low mileage (he's retired). You can check various components in the engine such as air filter, plugs and make sure it's been serviced. even give it an Italian tune up (!) but you may not improve things all that much!

Biggest factor in economy is driving style. Harsh accelleration will kill it stone dead.

So gently does it. Keep the speed down, avoid stops by anticipating more. If you see a hold up coast to a stop. Keep the tyres to the correct pressure (at least ). Remove all the useless junk form the car, your paying to haul that stuff around. Remove roof racks etc. Keep the windows closed, only use the air con when necessary. Remember short journeys are thirstty journeys so only use the car when you can't walk it.

I know someone who regularly uses his Range Rover to go three hundred yards to the shop. Madness!

Finally shop around for your fuel. See the online fuel price sites like http://www.petrolprices.com/

That should help.

25mpg sounds awful from such a dinky wee car.

So gently does it.

Please don't encourage people to crawl away from traffic lights! I've found that brisk acceleration has no negative impact on economy at all. Cruising speed and wasted braking are the biggest killers.

I was referring to people accellerating harshly and then slamming on the brakes all the time. Which I see muppets doing every day on the A12 on my way to work.

Gentle accelleration (within reason) and anticipation coasting towards a hold up ahead, really do cut down your consumption. Plus you have the good chance that by the time you get there the hold up wil have moved off so you don't have to stop or at least your not waiting as long as the hurry up and stop crowd.

My 1.6 automatic is regularly nudging 45+ mpg (Inst. computer figure) using these methods. Course thats when the computer thinks it's actually using petrol...whereas mostly I'm using LPG.

Automatics always have poorer petrol consumption, I had a Citroen C3 automatic and could get 35mpg out of it regularly and push it up to 44mpg if I drove like my 76 year old dad, who has been driving for economy for years.

The only way to keep the fuel economy "high" on long journeys was to keep it at a steady 55mph and watch the revs like a hawk, keeping the air con off and windows up also helped. Switching to premium petrol did have an effect but not good enough to make it worth while, I got a 4% increase in economy for a 7% difference in price at that time.

I have tried finding the published fuel economy figures for this model but can't seem to find them anywhere. For the manual version I have seen published figures of 50mpg so the figures you have calculated may be within the normal range for your car.

Cruise control helps a lot too. If you have it.

hyundai getz 1.3 automatic - poor petrol consumption - unthrottled

I've heard that but never been able to figure out why. Lean burn cruise has been dead for quite some time.

There's no doubting that 55mph works-aerodynamic drag is a cruel mistress! I can manage short stretches of motorway at 55, but more than 10 miles is agony; I don't know how lorry drivers do it. When I was in the states, I was amazed to see semi tractor units barrelling down the interstate at 75!

Sometimes going a bit faster can help in an old automatic. In the old days, the torque converter was only locked in top gear and only above a certain speed. So if you trundled along at 40 it would sit in 3rd with a slipping converter, but if you got up to 50 it would go into overrdrive and lock up. Top gear is often quite steep in an auto and it's worth getting into it. When the AA used to do decent car reports, the autos often turned in better motorway economy than manuals for this reason.

I usually set 65mph - which is faster than HGV's but nice and relaxed in the Note -2500 rpm. Yes I do have overdrive.

Driving at 80 + all I'd save is maybe maybe 5 to 7 minutes but the extra fuel I'd use just isn't worth it. Besides I need my licence for getting to work.

That said you'd be really surprised the people I see go hurtling past and how often I catch them up down the road. Real Tortoise and Hare stuff.

hyundai getz 1.3 automatic - poor petrol consumption - unthrottled

Quite. I sometimes treat myself to a quick blast at the end of a long stretch at 65 though to reward myself for being good!

Drag rises with the cube of speed and past 40 it dominates. Tall gears can't save you. But you still hear people claiming to get 55mpg at 85+....

hyundai getz 1.3 automatic - poor petrol consumption - jamie745

The crawlers from traffic lights which make everyone elses journey 3 times longer in the name of saving a modicum of fuel are just annoying. Yes your instant mpg gauge says you're doing 0mpg when you're sat still! Obviously!!! You're not moving!!! Aaarrghh!!

I couldnt hack 55mph on the motorway if it was avoidable. I think we've concluded the Getz automatic just has very poor economy. And no amount of taking a torch out of the boot and leaving it at home will solve that.

Another fuel saver....drive in thin soled shoes or even bare feet.

...and check the brake pedal for sharp edges first!

Take that CD out of the glovebox and leave it at home, must be at least 40 grams!

Dieting perhaps? Ain't no chubby F1 drivers....

In any event I reckon most people could better that 25mpg.

hyundai getz 1.3 automatic - poor petrol consumption - jamie745

I can better 25mpg in my 3litre S-Type! Hardly the biggest gauntlet thrown down.

>>I couldnt hack 55mph on the motorway

Lucky you don't have to use the M1 between junctions 10 and 13. There's another couple of years of SPECS enforced 50MPH restrictions during the ongoing works.

hyundai getz 1.3 automatic - poor petrol consumption - jamie745

You're right i dont use the M1, but roadworks and cameras giving you a 50 limit is unavoidable, i said i couldnt hack it if it were avoidable.

What can take another two years though? The Japanese got a collapsed highway rebuilt in a fortnight after an earthquake.
