new astra 1.4 vvt turbo - any one got the new astra whats it like on petrol? - TR7

I do up to 200 miles a day and am looking at a used new shape astra 1.4 petrol turbo. Has anyone got one whats it like on fuel? I can't afford a new shape diesel and have concerns anyway about dpf dmf problems with diesels.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I am getting 39.8 mpg in a 1.6 turbo astra old model (180 bhp) as against 36.2 quoted for the combined cycle, so you would think the 1.4 turbo new model would have the same potential.

Yes I have a 1,4 Turbo Elite, minor issues with trim rattle dealer advises not under warrenty, 2 re calls one heater, one cruise control ( still playing up ) and last week after a service advised at 20k miles new gear box required, but none in stock month wait. Not happy to say the laest, good idea of a car but cheap parts / trim are letting Vaxhall down badly. Any more problems and I MAY TRY FOR A CHANGE OF CAR ! have had Astras and Corsas for years this may be my last.

Sounds like modern Vauxhalls all over to be honest. Dealers won't, or can't fix problems.

I had a late model Vectra that had an oil weep around the exhaust manifold. Wasted 8 months of my life going back and forward to dealers to get this measured, that adjusted, the other replaced before they decided the head gasket was leaking. No s***, Sherlock, told you that 8 months ago. One month, new head, head gasket later I get the car back, and it's drinking oil like a 2-stroke. All on a car with less than 20k on the clock.

That was the last of 5 Vauxhalls I'd owned, changed them every 18 months. Now driving an old Mondeo I've had over 2 years, and never been happier.

My experince of vauxhall dealers ability to repair combo vans compared to a local independent leaves alot to be desired.

If you drive 200 miles a day you won't have the DPF problems that afflict diesels that do too low a mileage. Diesel could be the better bet in your case.

For your high mileage you need as new a car as you can afford: it could be worth looking at the Kia Ceed or Hyundai i30.

Good call. The missus has a i30 1.4 petrol. Done 11k in it, and it's averaging 42mpg. 108PS, so it can go reasonably well, and it's pretty good on the motorway - at 80 it's quieter than my old Mondeo.
