Is anyone going anywhere nice this summer? I'm only being nosy because I have bought my little camera and I am off to Cyprus tomorrow. Lots of archaeology and a wine tour :-)
|
Shame it's Cypriot wine! Have you sorted out your reading material? And don't forget to send us a postcard!
|
Archeology is so last epoch.

Have a great time - we'll miss you!

Thank you!
I will send a postcard of course. I've never been to Cyprus before so I've no idea about the wine. There's a food tour too; can't get much better than Greek food IMO. I've got 6 books for 10 days, all at least 4cm thick. I've got my Greek phrase book too as I've not much Greek beyond 'hello', 'thank you' and 'the bill please'.
Behave yourselves while I'm gone boys - no squabbling now!

I unfortunately missed my chance this summer. You are lucky to have had the opportunity to visit Cyprus. There must be a lot of history to enjoy and study. Let us know what you discovered while on this trip.

I thought they spoke Turkish in Cyprus ,if not yasou helps.
If you need any info , for gods sake don't look at trip advisor .did you see the program mid week on channel 4 .
At first I thought I was watching an edition of the fast show ,but no ,apparently it was serious .
If you want more of the same madness take a look at the trip advisor forum .What a bunch of pretentious p,,,,,cks.
It reads like the lunatics have taken over the asylum.
Trip Advisor should be a great site ,offering a needed service . Instead thier reviews and posts reflect some very strange personal viewpoints .

I thought they spoke Turkish in Cyprus
Please tell me this is a leg pull. O/wise have quick Google of Cypriot history.
|
It seems likely that Turkish would be widely spoken in Cyprus ,After all the Turks over ran most of the place about 30 years ago didn't they.? Perhaps they didn't if you're Greek .
However at you're suggestion ,and for the sake of accuracy the following is a paste from Wikipedia ,
The country has two official languages: Greek and Turkish.[1] Armenian, Cypriot Maronite Arabic and Romani are also recognized as minority languages.[126] In addition to these languages – according the Eurobarometer by European Commission – 76% of the population of Cyprus speak English, 12% speak French, and 5% speak German.[127].
I thought I would try northern Cyprus for a holiday next winter ,the currency is the Turkish lira ,so possibly better value?
Any suggestions.

The Republic of Cyprus itself does not recognise 'Northern Cyprus' and nor do most other nations. Most Cypriots are Greek in origin and language, and most speak English as well. On the Turkish-held side there is very little Greek or English spoken.
Please read some facts: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyprus

My parents have been going to North Cyprus on and off for the last 20 years. Getting there used to be a real headache - you had to land in Turkey, then take an 'internal' flight as no airline recognises it as a Country. One year they were delayed 4 days as the aircraft failed and they were stranded.
Now you can cross the border freely it is much easier - they fly to Larnaca then the owner of the property picks them up - they stay near Kyrenia which is about a 90 minute trip. Turkish Lira has gone from 2.4 to the pound to 2.8 in the last couple of years, so a Country which was already cheap is now even cheaper. Full blown meal for two with drinks is about £20 if you go to local restaurants.

Just looking at the Wikipedia site for facts, according to Wikipedia.
76% of the population, speak English .12% speak french and 5% speak german.A total of 93%.
Does it follow then that only the remaining 7% of the population speak either Greek or Turkish.?
On a more sensible note .
I believe you can now fly direct from the Uk to northern Cyprus ,
is that correct ?
If so which northern airports offer flights.
It takes longer for me to drive to heathrow or gatwick ,a tedious drive ,than it does for me to fly from a local airport to Tenerife .

Direct flights, UK to Ercan, are available

My parents have priced up the flights to Ercan from Manchester. Last year they were twice the price of Jet2 to Larnaca from Leeds.
|
Thanks for that dave ,Leeds is my nearest airport.
In a couple of weeks were going to Tenerife ,playa de las America.
We went last year ,and about 15 years ago.
It's a a resort that's changed dramatically ,especially on the Los Christianias side.
A huge amount of money has been invested to make the place more upmarket.
Apparently it's the Russians that are providing the funding .
Not sure whether that's a good thing?
I thought last year about replacing my omega while I'm their ,they appear to be a lot cheaper ,but I'm wary of ending up with a fake .most of the shops their are independent family businesses .No chance of getting my money back if I get ripped off.
