2006 ford mondeo - Loud bang then knocking from exhaust or suspension - itsmeself

A few weeks ago when leaving a car park i heard a very loud bang from underneath the car. I got out to have a look and found a piece of metal on the ground, it was a kind of arc shape and one end looked like it had been sheared off something. However as i couldn't see any obvious signs of damage underneath the car and it seemed to drive normally i had forgotten about it and decided maybe i just drove over the part and it skitted up and hit the chassis to make the bang i heard. Just yesterday going round a mini roundabout i heard a similar bang. i pulled in again couldn't see any signs of obvious damage under the car. However i found another similar piece of metal caught in under the wheel arch. Since this most recent event i have noticed an occasional knocking noise coming from the rear of the car, although this may just be my paranoia now that i am listening out for something.

So i thought id throw this out to some of the experts on here and see if anyone has any suggestions as to what may have gone wrong and whether im in for a whole heap of pain or not.

Cheers

Worried.

Front springs???

2006 ford mondeo - Loud bang then knocking from exhaust or suspension - itsmeself

By springs do you mean suspension? Could be, was one of the things that i had initially thought of (although i think its from the rear not front) but the ride seems smooth enough and the part of the spring that i can see from looking in the wheel arches look to be still intact.

Any dimensions ?

Material ? e.g Aluminium , steel, cast iron etc.

Rusty or Painted ?

does it look like a part of a spring ?:

Yea sorry i have should provided that info. The piece of metal that i found was, was fairly heavy so at a guess id say iron or steel not aluminium. It was painted and fairly clean (which was what made me think that it was something i had driven over instead of being from the car itself). It was looked like it could have been part of a hook or coil, although only one end looked sheared off. About 1cm in diameter and maybe 5 or 6 cm in length, although considering i found two roughly similar pieces overall length would probably been about 10 cm, maybe it was some sort of clamp to hold something in place, although i always found it strange that it was painted and fairly clean.

Sounds like it is part of a front suspension spring.

Have a look at the inside walls of the front tyres as when these springs break the ragged ends can cause damage to the tyres..

Both springs on the front seem intact as far as i can see and the tyres seem fine too. Can i ask why you think the front and not the rear? I do hear a knocking kind of noise going over speed bumps etc but that does seem to be from the rear of the car. Could it be the exhaust i wonder? although that looks ok to my untrained eye aswell.

Trying to trace the location of a noise whilst driving is notoriously hit and miss-the acoustics are very unpredictable. Basically I've never got the front/rear question right more than half of the time ie I can't beat the monkey.

The front springs tend to have a harder time than the rear springs so they are more likely to go first. If one spring breaks, then there is more stress on the other side so it often follows a few weeks later. This seems to correlate with your experience. Springs tend to break near their ends so a quick visual inspection often misses the fracture.

ok thanks for the info, and i know you are spot on about the difficulty in pinpointing where a noise comes from in a car, im notoriously bad at it. I guess that just leaves me to book the car into a garage to have them checked. One other question, am i crazy to drive the car to work tomorrow assuming that the springs have gone?

Thank you unthrottled, I could not have put it better.

I agree with you 100%

Quick update: Just got the call from the garage, was indeed a broken rear spring up at top as was suggested by many of you guys.

So thanks for your advice it at least prepared me for the pain involved in having them replaced.

It's not that big a job is it?!

£290 to replace both springs. So not huge but still not great news.

hi. I'm in the same boat as you with springs....my volvo has 101k on the clock and didn't get any loud bangs, just noticed that high speed left turns involved a saggy feeling...

its only when the car was on a ramp that the spring showed any damage the car still had a level ride height when sat in a car park...

in the end bought a pair of (rear) springs from the volvo main dealer £150 (inc vat)

and getting a local volvo/saab specialist to change them over. they charge 1hr per side at £49+vat per hour....

so pretty much the same as you...

Paul.
