Aldi's hoppy IPA is ideal to slake your thirst on a warm eve, but tonight my price-versus-quality aim settles upon the Hyundai i10 of the white wine world:- Asda Chenin Blanc, £3.58 (75cl) South African Chenin Blanc. Seems rude not to quaff it at that price. Cheers. Any other top tip tipples welcomed.

I am rather a fan of Wolf Blass Yellow Label Chardonnay, on permanent offer in Asda for a fiver. I used to be a red wine/ real ale fan but can't drink those anymore, so I've had to get on the white wine instead (or...lager...at parties).

Why can't you drink red wine and real ale any more? You can't go to rugger b***** chindigs and ask for a glass of poxy chardonnay! Mr Bobbin will be so embarrassed.

BTW-does he like cars? And is he on HJ?? I've been trying to figure out who it might be!

>>Have a chronic illness which means I can't have 'dirty' drinks like red wine anymore - boo :-(

>>Mr Bobbin wisely stayed away from all ladies' rugby nights. Anyway I used to be able to drink him under the table. He was a cheap date.

BTW-does he like cars? And is he on HJ?? I've been trying to figure out who it might be!

>>He is not on here. He loves his Celica but he knows only that petrol goes in and 'go' comes out. I joined this forum because he got fed up of me talking about cars and driving all the time! I have made him sound daft now but he is a physicist too. He likes planes.

But the dirty ones are the ones that taste so good-That's catastrophic.

He likes planes.

That doesn't make him sound any less daft! [image of man with outstretched arms running round garden] . You could go to air shows. I'm the opposite-I don't really like cars, only engines!

We do go to air shows.

We do go to air shows.

..but wish we didn't?

An afternoon squinting into the sky and nursing a sore neck! Still, occasionally, they'll fire up a WWII Merlin V12 or A Pratt & Witney radial-and all is forgiven.

Oooh just remembered a very nice one (I take a photo on my phone if there's a bottle I've liked) - Dolphin Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It went well with a curry if I recall. Also Asda.

Well, if you must drink white, New Zealand Sauvignin blanc is a good start. The Villa Maria isn't too shabby either.

This Week was not on form in case anyone wondered. Blue Nun will have to go back in the fridge.

Dolphin Bay is a NZ sauvignon blanc. You can't stack booze for almost 5 years in Asda and not learn a thing or two ;-)

5 years? Thjat's A-level and undergrad beer money then! Poor you. I'm going to have a nice pint of Deuchars. I'll be thinking of you (not in a seedy way!).

Deuchars IPA. I knew it well. :-((

Comforting, I suppose, to know that physicists get married to each other: otherwise the race of physicists would become extinct.

NZ Sauvignon is normally good but for a refreshing, not too expensive, white on a hot summer's day I don't think you can beat a good French Vouvray.

I would have thought that Avant would be extolling the merits of a glass of Czechosolvakian 2006 Skoda Octavia red...

Mine's an '11, and it's white. :)

Pere Anselme La Reserve d l'Aube Syrah-Merlot 2010. To quote that Oz Clark= 'You wouldn't normally blend the rich scented Syrah with the softer, milder Merlot—but this works. The wine is very warm and round, positively lush in its spiced plum sauce and stewed cherry way, but there’s a bit of tannin there too and it all makes for a good, self–indulgent red.’ About £6 a shot, but 6 free with my Spectator sub, perfect anitdote to my women reading Heat.
