Ford Mondeo - Noisey When cold - herald

Hi further to my earlier post about my faulty Nissan Xtrail i have decided to get shut, today i have been looking at a Passat diesel 2.0tdi i work on these engines at work and leaning towards one.

Anyway while i was at the dealers they had a very nice 2007 Ford Mondeo 2.0tdci 115 Ghia with all the bits, i have never been keen on the mondeo but after a test drive i was very impressed, my only concern was how noisey it was when cold, is this normal from this model? it was quiter when warmed up.

Also what what else should i be looking out for?

It has 70k miles with full ford service history, and to be honest i surprised myself by liking it more than the passat i was originally viewing and about 1k cheaper but 2 years newer.

Having owned two Mk 3 2.0 TDCi Mondeo's, I can confirm they have noisy engines when cold but from my experience they are good cars.

It's the nature of the beast to be noisy when cold. When it warms up it quietens down, unlike the VW diesels!

Check for good clutch action, no noises related to pressing the clutch pedal, no visible smoke whatsoever at idle. Take it for a good hard drive at up to 4k rpm, which will help to show up any fuel system related trouble if there is any. Check in rear window for smoke as you do this too. A bit of grey diesel smoke is normal. Black or white is not.

I seems from what I have read vw passats have injector problems how do mondeos do with the fuel system?

Common failures on Ford TDCi engines are camshaft sensors. Fortunately it's a 30 second job to do. These engines do perform very well though, they drive like the clappers. Oh, and diesel knock when they cold? Yes, they all do it.....
