Driving holiday Costa Blanca in March - Bill Black

Briefly, I'm after any advice on where to head for and any special hotel recommendations outside the main resorts, starting from Alicante - do we head south or north?
I know Spain in March isn't ideal, but as long as we don't get any snow I'll be happy, and it's only a week.

Hi Bill. Hope I am not too late as you don´t give your travel dates. I live near a small town called Oliva halfway between Alicante and Valencia so my advice is go North. From now until the 19th most towns in the province of Valencia will be celebrating "fallas". I could explain it but if you google "fallas de Valencia" you will get the picture. Will probably all be in Spanish but doesn´t really matter. Valencia is a must and their fallas celebrations have to be seen to be believed. Be in the town hall square for 14:00 hours any day up to the 19th and brace yourself. Get there at least half hour before hand and don´t worry if you cannot see what is going on - daytime fireworks (mascletas) are all about noise !!. It will be busy. If your visit is after 19th Valencia is still very much worth a visit - old part of the city wonderful and all very walkable. You can also go down to the port by Metro and see the F1 track and the port itself where the America´s Cup was held. The area around the City of Arts and Science is worth a look just for the architecture. Some good reasonably priced hotels in this area although on-street parking can be difficult.

Good hotels are also available in Gandia and Cullera, both of which are linked to Valencia by an excellent rail network. Return ticket from Gandia is about 9 euros. Travel by road is easy and roads in far better condition than UK. It is worth a trip inland to enjoy some wonderful mountain scenery.

I could go on forever - my wife and I have been here for 6 years and absolutely love it. It would be good to hear from you after your trip.

Bien viaje

Hi Optimist
Thanks for your reply before our trip last week. We took really pot luck (and your advice) and headed north after a couple of nights in Alicante. We had a nice trip but didn’t get so far north as we had intended, mainly because we got fed up with unloading/loading the car at every overnight stop. We found the Parador in Lavea gave us all we were after, a nice room with balcony overlooking a lovely garden with good beach-side walks for exercise. Very pleasantly surprised by the pretty countryside, with more greenery than we had expected, the roads too, as you said, were in very good order and a pleasure to drive in our hired Fiesta. A nice little car incidentally, except that I was plagued with gas pains that I can only attribute to the weird sitting position, this is also part of the reason we didn’t do the miles we had intended. We were lucky with the weather too, so all in all, a good break.
The only negative that always strikes me with Spain is the absolute refusal by the Spanish to communicate in anything but Spanish. It’s crazy, even staff in 4 and 5 star hotels refuse to understand simple things like room numbers, drinks and menu items in anything but Spanish. I tried in both English and French but no, hopeless. Reception staff, maybe, but waiters etc. nope.
They want (and need) our tourist Euros, but not us it seems…
How do you get on living there? Do you you speak Spanish? If so, are you accepted as part of the community?
All the best, Bill
