my car has failed the mot - i have put some additive in - as the garage advised but now they say I must run it for 200 miles - how can I do that with no mot

When is the old MoT up?

Change oil and filters, a few gallons of super unleaded / diesel and an italian tune up. this assumes the failure of the MoT was emmissions.

No need for 200 miles, 20 should do!

Book another MOT at a place some 30-40 miles away. Exemption from MOT if proceedings to/returning from a booked MOT Test.

On the way there once warmed give it the italian tune up HJ recommends - run it at 4000 -4500 revs for 10 miles or so.

Just a suggestion

.... and after your Italian Tune-Up make sure you book the re-test so they can do it as soon as you arrive when it's hot, not leave it sitting around for two hours cooling down. As suggested, key is clean oil and new filter, new spark plugs and air filter - all will help just as much as an addititive.

Spark plugs in a diesel?I presume your car is diesel and failed its emission test which a garage has every right to do.

The 200 miles sounds silly.A decent service like everybody else is saying should do it and a warm up ,unless the engine is on his way out.

Why do you presume it's a diesel?

Diesels can't fail emissions-only smoke!

vectra - failed mot - Dutchie

Emissions.

A substance discharged into the air, espescially by an internal combustion engine.

Smoke?

Once again - where does the original post says it's a diesel Vectra?

The magic additive/snake oil may or may not be linked to the failure cause! Difficult to tell from the information given.
