02 Mondeo diesel Estate - rear brake calipers - zane

Hello, I changed the rear brake pads on my 02 Mondeo yesterday. Had a devil of a job to get the pistons back in to make space for new pads (broke a decent sized g-clamp trying). Ended up taking them off, getting them in a vice and hammering them back in (desperate men do desperate things!)

Read on a forum today they need to be wound back in with a special tool!!! I didn't notice at the time I am hoping that they would have tracked around as I hammered,

2 questions: What is the purpose of the rotating and do you think I've b*****ed them up inside with my 2 pounder. They appear to be working fine on the road.

Any advice appreciated.

Zane.

Its part of the automatic take up for the handbrake. You are driving a potential death trap.

You need a piston wind back tool to prevent damage the the h/brake mechanism. On the left side ,the piston is wound back anticlockwise,so the tool needs to be left and right operation.hth

"desperate men do desperate things!" ....... and perhaps stupid things as well. What on earth made you think that a caliper made out of alloy would take kindly to being thumped with a 2 pound hammer? Sorry, but you must be a bit inzane.

WOW ! just goes to show how little knowledge is very dangerous and would of been cheaper to of taken it to someone in the know.
There was a technical bullietn that when these are removed they must then be bleed upsidedown to expel all the air and debris.
I hate to think what state that fine little mechansim is in now and the calipers must of distorted as well. Potentially an accident waiting to happen. Watch out for 02 mondeo estates coming the other way incase the brakes fail !

Thanks again,
