I need a replacement for my FRV. With 4 daughters & 3 dogs i need a big lump so have settled on Motoring Steralisation so going full MPV. I wont be doing hardly any mileage except the run to Bordeaux in the summer so im not too bothered about economy, if that makes sense. Ive got it down to 3 motors.

Grand Voyager 2.8crd Executive, 2007, 57k fully loaded for £11499

Grand Espace 3.0dCi RHD Import,2008, 14k 6 seater Initiale for £14000

Galaxy 2.0 lx petrol,manual New Shap e2007, 17k for £9999.

I cant decide to go Luxury or Sensible so need a little steering in the right direction. Which would be the most reliable. I know the Renault & Ford are the models least appealing to the general public, but i feel makes them good value to Me.

Thoughts please everyone.

Cheers James

From a practical point of view the Galaxy 2.0 petrol is the best. The Renault & Chrysler are lovely vehicles , loaded with toys but quite a liability at the age. I appreciate you are not doing the miles but that is quite often when things start going wrong. The Renault would be ok in France "when" it fails, The Chrysler is hage and loaded but could ba a bit of a chance.

The type of vehicle you require with large family and dogs is really a multi van. These are really popular in Europe where you would have a Ford or VW based van with the front half fitted out in luxury, alloys and met paint & Tint etc and AC and the rear most panel as a van. The Ford transit you can order as a new build to any spec and have seen a few in Europe even with a cosworth engine etc just as an example. Merc Vito/Transit/VW etc

I have driven a few Ford Transit conversions and they drive so well and are so practical they are simply brilliant .

something like this, with the rear seats removed & panels placed for the dogs. 2.2 tdci engine, great crusier. Loads of room and comfort with deals from about £15k new!

Before i looked yesterday at all these 3 vehicles, i was already sold on buying a VW Caddy Maxi Life 1.9 tdi 5 speed manual ....Which was my own choice. However the Good lady & Kids are telling me that it's a Van with Windows.....HJ has recommended the VW highly which was my reason for going down that route, but the OH & Kids want the Gadgets etc...I think i should over-rule and go VW. I prefer the idea of a Van Based vehicle as I'm pretty sure the reliability would never be a problem...

I did have a 5 seater Vito crew van which was brilliant but need more seats now.

Now i'm stumped again....

Yep I have the same problem, the van/mini bus these days are great but there seems to be a stigma with a van! having said that the berlingo proved popular in the end!

You have sumed it up really, your Vito was brill and a caddy maxi had been a choice. Itsa all about street cred! my wife won't let me have a transit van which would be best for us especially when we take the caravan abroad for a month at a time in Europe, load space would be fantastic. The VW Minibus/vans in Europe are very popular.

bet the misses wins !

hi James - got to this as quick as I could! So, has to be a newish Galaxy doesn't it?

All round good reviews, (latest generation, that is), S-Max floopan etc, nice diesel engines & speecy ones have quite a few gizmos. Voyager looks overkill to me, Renault... hmmm.. I always think 'State Motor Company' with Renault, think it's more likely to go wrong than the others.

When we picked up our Ford Focus I had a walk round the showroom and had a look at the Ford Tourneo 9 seater bus.For £16000 pounds its good value for money in my opinion. We dont need the space but I would be temped in a couple of years to get one .Ideal for going abroad and plenty of room for the luggage and have a stop for a nap.

many thanks for the replies. out of the 3 the ford looks to make the most sense. My concern is that in the last 3 years with my FRV i have never even lifted the bonnet EVER..So ive been really spoilt with reliability etc. I suppose a 3 year old Galaxy @ £10k has to look good value. Without being naive whats the worst that could happen & How much to rectify, Hypethetically speaking...The bodywork is immaculate, interior like new, started 1st time, no excessive smoking from the exhaust. The idea also of going for the most basic model is that there is less to go wrong'''Hopefully''''

Thinking £10k Galaxy or £15k VW Caddy Maxi life, Where's that coin gone?......

Air con pump is the weak spot on a galaxy, and if these fail they contaminate the whole system with microscopic metal fragments, so if a pump fails its expensive to have the whole system dismantled and cleaned properly. Check for damp carpets & clutch wear & make sure it has both keys with the car and working.

All cars are an unknown quantity s/hand. Your FRV has been good but a Ford can be as well. As with any car you can get good or bad. With Torneo good value for money new with full warranty , 3 year warranty for 5k more ? than a s/hand galaxy. I agree with the less toys less to go wrong! I tend to do the same.

If you go Galaxy, don't rule out the other members of the family, the VW Sharan and The SEAT Alhambra.

You're looking for 6 occupied seats and considerable boot space for the mutts. An FRV keeps it's full bootspace with 6 up, while a "Full MPV" will lose a large chunk - unless you have chihuahuas I think you'll struggle with Galaxy, etc.

Grand Voyager I don't know the bootspace, but unless you're looking to splash upwards of 30 grand, I'd consider the Hyundai i800 - http://www.hyundai-car.co.uk/newCars/i800/

Van based, but re-jigged suspension for passenger driving. 8 seat capacity (2-3-3) with a big boot even if fully loaded, good engine, appears reliable, under 20 grand new http://tinyurl.com/hyundai-i800 for 'best deal' via HJ.

Problems? No curtain airbags iirc, and if you want an autobox it's a special order and a higher tax-bracket (manual gets in under 225g/km CO2).

As a happy FRV owner myself, I'd not switch to a 'full MPV' without thoroughly testing it's capacity - some have fold down but not fold-away seats compromising bootspace (think the Chrysler ones fold into the floor though).

BTW new shape Galaxy doesn't have VW/Seat family like the old model. :)

so a quick update...Went to look at the Hyundai in more depth, although iv'e seen a couple on the road and think they are quite commanding, walked into the Showroom and asked to see the Vehicle on the Website, to be told the Man who deals with it isnt in today & no-one else here deals with the i800's, it may be downstairs but the other salesman is BUSY so we dont really know..'' Quickly loosing the possibility of taking the £18000 out of my back pocket, Hypothetically obviously... A phonecall to Sales Manager will follow tomorrow.. Then went to VW to look at Caddy Maxi Life, although no commercial salesman was available, i was shown around by nice salesman who was new but knew nothing but tried his hardest. I was really impressed with the Basics, Shape & size etc, But the OH & Kids would never ever live with the overall commercial feel and felt it was all to Van-ish.. Although that suited me. So whilst there the OH saw a really impressive Caravelle, ''What about one of those''.. So im now looking into maybe 55/06 plated model with a high mileage.. Have seen a 05 with 95k for 15k which is looking appealing otherwise 57-58 for £20k... I suppose most people who buy one will keep it for 10 years so it's all relative. I feel like i'm cheating myself slightly, i was looking forward to getting my M5 estate when middling my mid 40's, now i'm getting excited about a Load Lugger with reversible seats. Is there any hope for me?...

welcome to the wonderful world of car salesman ! frustrating isn't it ! and I thought it only happened to me!

15k for 95000 miles ! I would go for a deal on a Ford torneo you could get it new with 0 miles and warranty and would drive just as well!

I wouldn't want to cross the hyundai showroom again after that ! but sad to say its a sign of the times and may be you need to go back and see one, much better value for money than the caravelle!
Need to have a word with the sales manager and get him to win you over for the i800 !
Good luck.
I had great plans of my own when the kids grew up but the trouble is they wont leave home so things don't always go to plan!

I would go for a vw, we bought an 07 2.0tdci Ghia Galaxy about 14 month ago and had nothing but problems since. You can find details of these in a post I did on here a couple of month back. Since then also had to have a new battery after it left us stranded. (When it works, we think the car is great)

The new Sharan looks nice but as one of the above posters mentioned, with any of the rear most seats up you will struggle for space.

Not to my liking but ssangyong do a large people carrier at very good prices.

I can agree with the galaxy comments , but having been involved with a fleet of taxis, over 300 in the fleet, the Transit & others were ok for the mileage but the galaxy's, alhambra's etc were just awfull and not up to the job.

I have had plenty of VW customers who would never buy another ! so its having a balance on practacalities and experince.

someone recommended the Ssangyong 7 seater rodius...

Any thought's?...
