I have a Rover 220SD with a "Brakes" problem. The problem is the pedal goes rock hard and the brakes themselves are of very little use. The problem has only just started and it has never happened before. If I stop turn of the engine then restart the brake pedal goes back to normal. I have checked the obvious things like the servo and the vacume pump and pipes but all seem to be in order. Got any ideas please?

It must be failure of the servo or vacuum source from the sound of it.
You need to check it out with a vacuum gauge under running conditions.
Not a faulty servo non-return valve, blocked/collapsed servo pipe, blocked servo filter or something daft like that?

Thanks for that MiddleMan. Will have to find someone local with avacuum gauge. DD

Any update DD?
Certainly never seen any vac pump failures to date on the 220SD....
218 and 418 Pierburg vac pump, yes, loads, but not the 220's combined with alternator pump.
