2 weeks ago I bumped somebodys car in the works staff car park. I was pulling into the space and caught the right hand side at the back of his car.

His car was facing forwards the same was as mine with the rear bumper closest to my car.

I caught the back right "wing" if thats the right word above and behind the wheelarch.

I said I would pay for any damage I had done and when we looked there was a small paint mark that wiped off. It was early morning and he said he would look again in the daylight.

I then received a photograph of small amount of damage to the right wheelarch (the bit thats angled in towards the wheel). which he said I had done. I said I dont think i had as it was nowhere near the paint mark (that had wiped off) and in anycase I would have had to have drove a canny way past his wheel before Id realised Id hit it and caused the damage reversing out... does that make sense?

It took him two weeks to get ONE quote - £200! I was told by someone at work he was going to a mate - it doesnt sound like mates rates. He is a temp and is working up in the north east from yorks and got the quote in yorks even though I offered to get a quote here for him while he was at work.

I received a text from him on sunday saying Im bringing the quote monday- please bring the cash in then. to which i said i would discuss it when I see him as I dont beleive I did that damage. He was furious and said he couldnt beleive i was denying it. I said again that id told him at the time ididnt beleive i had done "that damage" and I was stunned he thought I had 200 hanging round the house!

Now he is getting aggresiveharrassing me for insurance details - saying its dragging on (its tuesday - he got the quote saturday and told me sunday!)

if he does this I will lose my no claims :(

Am I allowed to insist on another quote as we beleive it is his mate doing this quote?

My father in law says i cant be liable in a private car park?

do I have to give him my insurance details if he asks for them?

Please help as I have to face him tomorrow... do I just class it as lesson hard learnt?

Did the damage to his car tally with the damage to yours? It looks you just scraped his car and he wants the rear wing respraying.£50 about the right price for a touch up.You don't have to give him any details regarding insurance if you are willing to pay Lucy might correct me.And you are entitled to another quote.Don't be taking in or treatened.

No damage at all on my car - which adds to the fact that if i had caused the small nick in the wheelarch it WOULD have damaged my car.

and a £200 estimate for work that 'needs' to be done.

Just by the fact he is demanding cash and the way he is being leads me to beleive he is trying to get money out of me. It is making me feel sick.

I did admit to bumping his car. I tried to do the right thing and look what happens :(

Hubby is saying i should refuse insurance details and refuse to pay... its easy for him to say when he is not the one having to face the guy.

Somebody reversed into my son's RAV4 just b4 Xmas , broke the paint on the bumper and roughed the plastic - £180 @ local Toyota to get it fixed properly.

Bumper off, sprayed - base, colour, lacquer, bumper refitted - perfect job.

Skoda £200 does not seem too expensive.

If it was done in your works staff car park and the other party was an employee, albeit a temp and he is harrassing you Report it to the Human Resources Department.

One thing that most companies will not tolerate is bullying in the workplace and harrassment constitutes bullying. If you get Human Resources involves, he will probably back down.

You are liable for the damage if you caused it. However he is under a duty to mitigate losses so the repair must be done at the cheapest rate.

Ask for an additional local estimate and challenge him if you believe there was pre-existing damage. Make sure you see an invoice and that it is done with a proper repairer.

Hi Thanks for that. Am I under obligation to provide my insurance details if he asks for them, even though I have said I will pay the cost?

Getting worried about seeing him now.

You have a legal obligation to provide insurance details but if you choose to "self-insure" - which is the phrase used for paying for the repair yourself there should be no claim on the policy and hence no loss of no-claims or policy excess.

However an accident -- even without a claim -- is a material fact and you are in theory supposed to disclose it and your premium may increase if you do so, for which reason many people "forget" to do so.

I guess the moral is: always go through your insurance.

It's always less hassle and may end up costing you less in the long run.
