Vauxhall Meriva - Grinding noise when braking - penguin

Hi all, I have a 2006 meriva, 1.7cdti and I noticed a terrible grinding noise when I brake. You can actually feel it on the brake pedal and it's like something is hanging from underneath and digging into the road (had a quick look and nothing is hanging down) Anyone have any ideas? The bearings were replaced October 2009 and new brakes were fitted approx 12-18 months ago

Have the brakes inspected before driving. Just because the brakes were replaced 12-18 months ago it doesn't mean they are not worn out.

Its very difficult to comment on brake issues on a forum & an inspection is the onluy sure way of diagnosing the problem.

If one pad or pads are worn out it will be dangerous to drive!

I'm taking it to the garage tomorrow to get it checked, it's half a mile down the road. It just frightened me a bit when it felt like something was digging into the tarmac! (obviously it isn't). It just suddenly came on. It doesn't make a noise when you brake softly but if you put medium to hard pressure on, that's when it makes the noise.

Has the car not been used for a while, could just be rust on the discs which should wear off after a couple of braking sessions from highish speed.

Or maybe a stone trapped in the caliper.

Some pads have a warning layer so when it wears down, it gives the noise you have described.

Then when you wear away the enire pad and get metal to metal contact, you get screeching and iron filings ruining the car paintwork behind the wheels..
