Can anyone shed any light on my problem..

Well I have a Mazda 6, 2.0 litre turbo diesel and I accidently and very stupidly put in £5 of petrol as soon as i realised I thought it wouldn't cause much of a problem if I just filled up with diesel (which later proved to be a huge mistake). After running on it for about 2 weeks, the car would start just automatically switching off on the road.

Now after taking it to over 4 garages including Mazda I'm stuck! I've been told many different things which have not worked.

So, firstly I took it to PF Jones who I've been told is a great diesel specialist, now seeing as the car just will not start it's very hard to actually diagnose the problem (or so I've been told). Anyway after being advised, One garage has changed the EGR valve - which was thought to be the initial problem but wasn't. Second garage the car was put on a diagnostic machine which came out with a long list of POSSIBLE problems, nothing definite so decided to change the crankshaft sensor and timing belt, still the car will not start.

Then it was decided, by yet another recomended garage it was the fuel pump which had gone so after the fuel pump had been changed it was still not starting. Now the garage then advised me it could possibly that the fuel pump was not starting because Mazda cars needed a special type of code for parts to work. After doing some research I found this was not the case at all so decided to take it to a friend of mine who could possibly shed some light. Ended up changing the fuel sender, STILL no luck.

Finally took it to Mazda still nothing could be found, now the car is not starting and I feel i've put too much time and money into just selling as a non runner! But its proving to be almost impossible to find out whats actually the root of the problem!

Anyone ? Help will be VERY much appreciated?

I very much doubt whether putting 4litres of petrol in your car has caused this problem.I find it hard to believe a Mazda main agents cannot find why it will not start what are they employing as techs,it may take sometime but not a problem in any car that cannot be solved eventually..

Well that's just it - I've spent nearly 4 weeks trying to solve the problem but nothing.

Every solution seems to lead to a dead end!

Have they removed all the injectors and tried starting the car you should see the fuel being sprayed by each injector, you need this as as a reference point if have no fuel then work backwards towards the tank.If you have fuel it should start no matter how rough it runs a diesel starts and runs on compression. My feeling is that you will have no fuel at the injectors and pobably a faulty pump.

Thanks for the reply,

The fuel pump has been changed and the injectors ahve also been changed today but the car is still not starting. According to the mechanic there is fuel going to the injector?

Have you seen fuel going to the injectors,if there is fuel then a diesel will start .

As I have said before you need to remove all the injectors leave connected turn the engine over you should see a spray of fuel from the injectors in the correct firing sequence. With all their complicated add ons diesels are still quite simple in there operation no fuel no start, fuel will start.

The engine will start if the valve and fuel timing sequence is correct, if the engine has sufficient compression, if the intake air charge is of sufficient volume, the exhaust unrestricted and if the injected fuel pressure is high enough to overcome the engine compression.

There is also a minimum cranking speed necessary to start any diesel engine - determined by the rate of heat loss as compared with the rate of rise of temperature of the air charge on the compression stroke. This determines the startability of any diesel engine and no amount of churning at low cranking speeds will start it - unless damaging ether is used as a start assist.

Time to go back to basics with this engine - in the hands of someone who fully understands the issues.

Having said that, I have found some Japanese fuel systems built under licence from European makers to be "flakey" as they age.

I take it that they have done a full compression test on the engine?

One assumes that all these criteria have been met as it was in a Mazda main agents, but cannot believe an official Mazda garage cannot find the fault surely they have checked the timeing as part of the process.

I think that it is being repaired by a novice who is a little bit lost it sounds like the pumps gone or the timing is out .I do not think we are getting the full story.

Well it seems you are right Andy, just found out the timing belt is out and needs adjusting. Its a simple enough job apparently, may do it myself.

The first garage I took it too made a mistake when putting the belt back on whilst trying to get to the CKP. So now there's a whole new problem.

Glad you have finally soved the problem.
