VW Golf 1.9 TD 05 - ? bearing gone - dean

Got a Golf with just under 50K on the clock.Had new brakes and discs on the front 6months ago. They are not VW ones and they squeak when the brakes are applied. Not long after it developed a droning noise, sounds like its coming from the rear. The noise gets louder especially if you go into a roundabout.Took it to a garage and the two very qualified chaps said they were not convinced it was a bearing.Told me to go away and put a few more miles on it and go back.Does it sound like a bearing has gone? Thanks for your help.

Jack up both rear wheels and spin them.Compare smoothness,a worn bearing will sound/feel rough as you spin wheel. This is what us MOT testers do as part of the test,as well as check for play. Most modern cars have non-adjustable wheel bearings so any play should be investigated further....it`s a sign that bearings are on their way!

I think bearing kits are around £20 or £70 if hub is damaged.

If on the other hand it is a front wheel bearing(more likely),then it is possible that it was damaged when the old discs were hammered off.....common problem.

I had a similar problem a few months back, (Octavia 1.9 tdi) actually changed one bearing before getting onto the forums. A very common problem which sounds exactly like bearing wear is uneven tyre wear on the rears, giving a saw tooth wear pattern on the inside edge of the tyre. You can check if it's this by changing your rear tyres onto the front and seeing if the noise changes. I noticed a very pronounced increase and steering roughness when I did this.

New tyres completely solved the problem, no noise, no vibration, so check this first. Affects across the VAG range.
