Vr6 front brakes - cos
I own a 94 Golf VR6, my problem is i find the brakes to be only just adequate(would like them to be better). Does anyone else agree? I know after 95(i think) VW put bigger front discs on the vr6.

Yes 95 on cars have the Plus running gear. That means 288mm discs as opposed to 280mm discs. Additionally the later cars have slightly larger calipers. However, the pedal feel on the later cars is said to be slightly worse. I have early VR6 brakes on my old Jetta 16v which are great. Although your car is a fair bit heavier i still think you should be able to get good results with the set-up you have. Consider changing brake fluid if you haven't done so in the last 18months, and switching to fast road brake pads, such as the Pagid ones, which can be bought at reasonable cost from german and swedish. Check the discs for wear too. If you still want more braking power you may have to fit bigger wheels to accomodate bigger discs, or consider fitting bigger calipers. This could produce good results, but you may have trouble getting a mastercylinder size that works well with the new calipers. I think you should be able to get some Volvo 960 calipers on if you want. The best person to talk to about brakes is Jeff at Hi-Spec motorsport, but he knows this and is often rude and his customer service is known to be sadly lacking.

Cheers. I have bleed the brakes and the linings are ok. I think one of my rear calipers is possibly on the way out though. When i change it i'm thinking of fitting steel braided hoses, are these as good as people say?

Its hard to say, i have never fitted brand new hoses, tested them, and then changed them all for braided items. Most people only fit the braided items in place of knackered hoses, so a improvement is hardly surprising. The braided hoses are a good idea though, and they are cheaper than genuine VAG replacements i believe. Volkspares sells them at a resonable price.

Rubber hoses even new ones tend to expand when under extreme pressures. So in theory the steel braided hoses should make for a good improvement.
