Hi,

I've just changed the front disks and pads on my VW Passat 2.0 petrol 2002. Have followed the Haynes manual and all guide pins, clamp bolts and wheel bolts are torqued correctly.

The brakes seem to be doing their job and stopping the car as they should but when travelling slowly and applying slight pressure to the brakes there is a 'clunking' sound from each front wheel, it only happens once each time the pedal is pressed.

I've checked them over and can't find anything wrong. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you fitted the screw to hold the discs on to the front hubs? If all is ok thats all i can think of at the moment with time it may become quieter.

The front outer pads are sided. Therte is an arrow on the spring side of the pad and they must be fitted with the arrow poining in the direction of rotation of the wheel. If they are in the wrong side then, yes, you get a single clunk when you first apply the brakes.

The sring is offset slightly and keeps the pad biased to the top of the caliper and resting on the guide rail.

The outer pad can also be fitted incorrectly by not removing the adhesive backing cover.

Lots of speed typos and an error try this

The front inner pads are sided. There is an arrow on the spring side of the pad and they must be fitted with the arrow pointing in the direction of forward rotation of the wheel. If they are in the wrong side then, yes, you get a single clunk when you first apply the brakes.

The spring is offset slightly and keeps the pad biased to the top of the caliper and resting on the guide rail.

The outer pad can also be fitted incorrectly by not removing the adhesive backing cover.

Peter D,

Cheers for that. I did have a quick look when I first put them on and never noticed any arrows. Thought I'd check again after reading your post and couldn't see any arrows on any of the pads. Swapped them over anyway and the clunk has gone. Cheers for the advice, worked a treat.

What make were the pads. ATE OEM the arrow is punched out of the spring base plate others havea printed arrow or adhesive label. Regards Peter

I assume you put the anti knock springs back correctly.
