Afternoon All,

I have just taken up a new role for a certain large bank based in Canary Wharf and I was after some advice on living in that part of London which I don't know well at all. I was comtemplating renting a room for a couple of months prior to renting a 2 bed apartment when SWMBO joins me in early Nov. I would like to be able to walk / cycle to work - something I have not been able to do since junior school....

Simplistically I think within a 2-3 mile radius of CW would suit me.

My questions are as follows.

1. Which side of the river - my preference would be North so i can walk / cycle, although I could use the pedestrain tunnels / clipper I guess?

2. North or South of the river which areas are good for bars / restuarants etc, and which are the areas to avoid i.e industrial areas etc.?

3. I have seen various websites for finding rooms etc. does anyone have experience of these, or for the money I am thinking of renting a studio flat, at least that way the place is my own

Any other advice gladly accepted.

Cheers - Paul

Where do you fancy - and how much do you fancy paying?!

You COULD live at the Wharf itself, or on the Isle of Dogs but I must say it's not my cup of tea, the concrete jungle that it is. You would be able to walk, but you might feel like you live in Guantanamo Bay - that said, lots of people do, but I suspect many of them have country residences too.

Just up the Docklands, you could live in Bow. I lived there for a while, full of nice Victorian houses, and some more modern developments; Bow Quarter is a great development (old match factory) if you like that sort of thing. I did find Bow a little "suburban" though - it's a nice enough place, but you don't really get the buzz of London; I like being able to walk into town/the south bank etc. etc.

Up the Jubilee Line to Bermondsey (a bit unfashionable and thus reasonably affordable, also zone 2 so saves on your tube fare) or Borough (distinctly "fashionable" in a "yuppy" sort of way). SE1 is a great place if you're young, reasonably (or very, depending on where you are) well off and child-free. I live there, albeit on the outskirts.

Personally, being further away than London Bridge on the Jubilee line would be, to my mind, missing the point. But maybe you enjoy commuting... friends take well over an hour to commute to the Wharf - bonkers.

The other direction on the Jubilee line takes you to Greenwich. Not really been there myself, but it has a certain following, quite villagey, and family.

Gumtree seems to be what people use for finding room shares/flats/studios etc.

There is no industry in London - until you reach Dagenham and such places, anyway.

You'll (probably) struggle to find something to rent for less than 6 months (being the minimum for an AST) unless you're taking a room in a house. I'd suggest finding somewhere temporary, and exploring.

If not a wind up post by the OP....

Get temporary accommodation and explore. You can negotiate rates at hotels too.

.... cannot help but remind me of windups past here. Tone etc. Probably wrong but used to have good search facilities and other 'tools'.

Not a wind up post, not sure why you would think that, fair enough challenge though.

Had not heard of gumtree so I'll try that, seems best advice and resonates with personal view is to rent a room close to work in the first place giving the option to explore various areas prior to making a decision.

Had not thought of Greenwich as well, but again can investigate at leisure. Head and heart say don't rush in I guess.

Thanks for inside info though - all knowedge worth assimilating.

I have been considering Greenwich but am thinking Hampstead might be a bit more affordable and it's slightly nearer to where I will be studying (KCL), has anyone had any experience living there? I've found a few nice lettings in the area for about 200 a week but I'm wondering if there's anywhere more affordable slightly further out of town but not much more difficult to commute from.

Any suggestions would be really useful.
