saxo 1.1 - battery drain, engine runs with key removed! - eluned52

The battery drained on my son's car over a few hours a couple of nights ago, he charged the battery and had no problems till tonight when returning from a short trip the engine wouldn't turn off even with key removed!. He stalled the engine (in gear/handbrake on) but all dashboard lights stayed on even with key removed (and ignition turned off) The car now wont start again. He could hear a ticking noise dont know if this is relevant? could it be the petrol pump? He has disconnected the battery (with rubber gloves on) as he didnt want to leave it incase something caught fire. He has only had this car a few weeks and the only other thing that might or might not be relevant is that the airbag light was flashing all the time then stayed on but reading other answers this seems to be a separate issue. Could this be a problem with the ignition switch or the transponder? Ive had cars for 30 years and never come across this before Im just a mum who will have a go at fixing most things but not sure where to start on this one!

Sounds like a faulty ignition switch...Faulty contacts not switching off. ... Take a deep breath : if (IF) I am correct, new switch means Citroen dealer and fiddling around with keys and doorlocks etc...£££s.

Hope not.
