Focus TDCi - New set of alloys at 35K - road humps to blame? - Bilboman

I've just got my car back after a week at the main dealer. (Was given a BMW 116 courtesy car, so every cloud...) After a recent tyre change I'd noticed a lot of vibration from the steering. Two visits to the tyre place failed to solve the problem, which turned out to be not wheel alignment but damaged alloys - there were a total of about a dozen dings and flat spots . Three of the four have been replaced by the leasing company and the Ford main dealer told me this kind of damage is all too common, now that speed humps are so "popular" all over Spain, just like in the UK. I follow HJ's advice on negotiating road humps (and pretty much everything else!) and with a permanently full boot I am not one to charge about the place, road humps or not.

Road accidents, especially amongst children, in urban areas have to fall, no question. Something has to be done, and until a better idea comes along, it's the compromise, better-than-nothing answer: a simple trade off - damaged wheels, or damaged children - and we all know the answer to that one, don't we?

Radars and speed cameras, I hear from the gentleman at the back...no good in Spain, drivers charge through red lights and STOP signs, flout speed limits, "forget" to pay their taxes... it's a different society; it's just the speed humps that are the same!

Indeed. We were in Northern Spain a few weeks ago and were amazed at how speed humps have multiplied in the couple of years since we were last there.

I'm a bit surprised to hear about Spanish driving habits. I know they tend to be suicidal nutters but I've always thought that the Spanish system of lights in front of you changing to red if you don't slow down was the ideal traffic management system. Of course, you're the one who lives there...

You must be hitting them at speed though, to damage the alloys? I tend to slow right down to 10mph and put one wheel central to the hump. It's a trade-off between protecting my car from damage and indignation at having to go so slowly when I have a legal...er...permission, not a "right"...to do 30.

I've always liked the idea of blasting my horn when going over speedbumps, you know to protect the kiddies from danger by giving adequate warning of my presence, but have never had the bottle to actually do it.

Shared surfaces seem to work, but again that slows the cars mainly. maybe teaching kids that roads are dangerous and to have some sort of responsibility would be good. In our street I regularly see kids cycle off the pavements without so much as a glance roadwards, in full view of their parents who do or say nothing.

My day, clip round the ear and no supper.

Could it be the tyre pressures weren't up to the mark? I can't help feeling that neglecting this with low-profile tyres [a ridiculous but obviously profitable recent development for the tyre/wheel industry] must result in lots of damaged wheels.

I'd put this down to pothole damage - speed bumps tend to take the tread off the inside edges of the tyres.

Thanks for the contributions! Tyre pressure has been a solid 2.5 bar (36 PSi) - tyre manufacturer's spec - since the wheel change six weeks ago, which is when I first noticed the vibrations. I don't slow right down to a crawl when "humping", but somewhere just below the reduced speed for the humped area (usually 30 km/h/18 mph.)

I probably would slow down even more if I had an automatic.

I took the car for its first long motorway drive today and there is still some vibration from 100 km/h onwards. It could be that I'm over sensitive now to FWD, having driven a BMW 116 courtesy car for the last week and 1000 kms!
