Steady reddy go

Can you please try to publicise the Portuguese system whereby the speed cameras are linked to a pedestrian crossing 100 yards down the road, that turns to red for 30 seconds if you exceed the limit. The glares and potential injuries that you may get from the motorists stopped going the other way is far worse than a £60 fine. The result is that speed limits are adhered to without fining or criminalising the motorist. If the government really wants to convince the voting population that cameras are not another form of taxation then that must be the way to go. Objections? Motorists will just drive on through, but not if a red light camera is fitted.

Believe me, I've have written exactly what you have written hundreds of times. In fairness, it has got through to the column enough to have caused some controversy. But because the Iberian system saves lives at the expense of making money it will never be adopted in the UK, where hypocrisy prevails, because that's what brings in revenue.
