overland to Oz - bluefrog
Hi All

My wife and I are planning an overland trip to Australia in a Land Rover 110
departing London in May 2002.
The route will cover Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Burma,
Thailand, Malaysia, Philipines and
ship to Oz.
If anybody would like to join us in their own 4x4 in convoy please
email me on pkoukoulis@yahoo.co.uk
or sandhorst@yahoo.ie.

Blimey! - You're brave!
No offence, I think I will stick with my daily 30 mile drive to work and back every day!
Re: overland to Oz - Ian Cook
I wish I were younger and brave enough to make such a trip - what an adventure!

I wonder what the road surfaces are going to be like in some of the countries you mention. I had considerable experience of driving Landrovers on poor roads in the Falkland Islands and found it quite tiring on loose surfaces.

The Landie gets quite a yaw on when driving on "marbles" (exacerbated by cross winds, of which there were plenty). Many were blown completely off the Stanley road (speed limit 40mph) - so bad that the military regularly shut the road in high winds.

Anyway - take care, and enjoy yourselves (I'm green with envy!)

Read a very good book many years ago "First Overland" Tim Slessor. About a trip with a Series 1 Landie from the hub of the Empire all the way to Singapore...a cracking read if the advise might be less than current........published 1957.......(found it in a secondhand bookshop for the price of an 'alf of bitter)
Re: overland to Oz - Nigel Yeung
There is an active Landrover club in the City state of Singapore.
Come and look us up (and take your boat to Oz from here).

Sadly my Series 3 1972 SWB Landrover - was the most fun convertible I ever had - but the most incredibly unreliable beast on this planet. Engine, gearbox, brakes, radiator, starter, the works needed replacing...and all my friends had similar experiences. Perhaps in the new millenium parts would be easier to obtain for a Toyota Landcruiser? (But your journey would be also be so mechanically uneventful that there would be no adventure!!)

Good luck on your trip. I wish I could do the same.
