Ford Mondeo III - Cam belt - manic-marley

Hi all,

Ive just bought a 1.8 LX mondeo 2001, ive ben told that some models are chain driven and others have a cam belt. How do i know which one i have as this has done 60000 miles and didnt know whether to change it as a precaution if needed.

You could give your local Ford dealer a call.

whenever i buy a car, if the belt has not been done, or if there is no history or knowledge it has i always get it changed as a precaution. if its a petrol it should be at 10 years or 100000 miles,

as yours is a 2001 and you dont know if its been done, i would do it

I confident your engine is belt driven if it is petrol.

Read HJ's original write up of this car - under "What's good". http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/mondeo-iii-2000?section=good

It is definitely a chain...! As is the 2 litre petrol. In fact, I'm pretty certain all the Mondeo III original engines were chain cam.

That's what attracted me to these cars.

Thanks guys, ive also been told if you take the engine cover off and its metal underneath its chain as the belt ones are plastic
