Hi,
Am about to plum for a 1.6 Petrol Picasso. Please don't try and disuade me...this decision has been hard to come by!
The question is, all things being equal..would you plum for a:
02 reg, 51k miles, 6 months MOT and no tax, 3 owners for £2kish, FSH
or
04 reg, 84k miles, short MOT and Tax, 3 owners, Cambelt done at 73k, Exhaust done, brakes done, FSH.
What do you reckon...?
Thanks all.

Neither of those is young. I'd say condition matters more, so buy the tidier one.
On paper, the 04 starts with an advantage, but these are French cars built for families, so what matters is how much has fallen off. The mileage suggests the 04 car may have been used for motorway use with only one person in it, which is probably less wearing on mechanics and interior than a lot of short distances with a full load of under-10s.
Without checking anything (or being qualified to comment, Oily), I'd say £2,000 seems a lot for a seven-year-old car that probably cost barely £10,000 new. Is the 04 at a similar price?

I Bought a 18 month old 1.6 petrol Picasso in 2006 as i had injured my back and getting in and out of a "normal" car was extremely painful. I kept it for 2 years and covered over 30,000 miles in which time all it needed was 2 tyres, 2 services and a set of brake pads. It never broke down, failed to start or "missed a beat", and was the most useful vehicle i ever owned. It took us on 6 holidays all over the UK loaded up with goodness knows what & coped easily with my daily commute into London. Sure it was no ball of fire performance wise, but it had no trouble keeping up with the traffic and always returned about 43/44mpg. I personally would go for the later higher milage model and hope that you are lucky with it as i was with mine. .

Hi WillDeBeest,
Thanks for your reply and advice. perhaps 'young' was a poor turn of phrase...or my knowledge of modern cars (or indeed any/all cars) is lacking...
Yes, they are both a similar price.
Unfortunately, as a Picaso is what will suit my needs - and pocket...this is the price they are...they don't hang around for long that's for sure! In fact...it would seem that it may well hold its value reasonably well too...depending on various factors of course....
Of all the 'research' (perhaps another loosley used term!?) I have done over the past few weeks, it would seem that ALL cars have either bits fall off, or have a problem with something-or-other...the question is...do I care if the 'issue' is a sunroof that doesn't open...or the engine falling out (these are just spurious examples to make a point).
We'd like an MPV type thing...for the 'ride height', and we have about £2k...and the problems with Picassos seem to be cosmetic/annoying...rather than fundemental.
For every disaster story, there is a 'good' story...and people seem to use 'review sites' to vent there anger...rather than praise...so are those results sqewed?
I reckon, all in all at this end of the market...you just pays your money and hope for the best...there is little alternative - obviously checking it out the best I can first...withthe little knowledge I have...
My tollder won't keep it looking 'nice' for long anyway...i just need it to start in the morning and 'work'...which it would appear these do...
Compromise all round, i know...but that's what the budget leads to.
I hope to view both cars, so will be able to assess what bits look worse I guess.
Many thanks for your advice though...I kinda thought about the 'previous use' angle too...
Am always happy to be shown the error of my ways though!
Thanks again.

I had two Picassos (both diesel however) and did 30K or so a year, I kept both for 100K+ and had no major issues with either.
