03 1.4 Difficult reverse gear - Maciej
Engaging reverse gear is frequently difficult. Forward gears work OK. The car covered 20,000 miles only. Any advise on rectifing the problem will be appreciated.

If it crunches when you try to engage it, the clutch is not disengaging properly

Couple of things to try.

Try engaging 1st gear before selecting reverse.

Wait with your foot on the clutch for a few seconds before selecting reverse.

Any easier at going in reverse?

Is 1st Gear sometimes more difficult to engage than gears 2-5, if so it is very likely to be a clutch problem.
On this Fiesta (unfortunately?) this is a hydraulic clutch and the slave cylinder is integral with this release bearing and therefore a gearbox out job, if this is the case renew the complete clutch assembly, the additional labour charge should be minimal.

It could be the clutch master cylinder, which i think is combined with the brake master cylinder, also fairly expensive.
