Hi
Looking for some honest judgement and advice from those in the know.
I have a 2002 petrol automatic 1.8 Renault Scenic (5 door expression+ with 70000 miles). It has the well discussed problem where the brake servo hisses (needing a replacement of the sealed unit costing 200+ and 5 hours of labour to fix). The brake discs are worn and it needs some minor work that I can do myself - one worn tyre, some bulbs need replacing etc).
I was using the car regularly but no longer need it. Until now I haven't been able to afford the repair work so the MOT and tax have been allowed to expire - the car is on a SORN.
Anyway. the question is - if I sell the car now in its' current condition, how much am I likely to receive, and should I sell privately or to a dealer? I think that if I pay for service, MOT and repairs to get the car fully roadworthy it will cost at least 800, and then if I'm very lucky I might be able to sell it for around 1400.
My limited knowledge makes it hard to judge whether to just sell...or repair and sell.
Thanks
Tim

Just sell your car to a trader and then go on holiday with the money :) No point on spending £800 just to sell it as you may not get anything like £1400 depending on the market and where you live.
I am sure you would easily get £800 in the current state its in, people pay silly money for broken cars as if htey can do the work them selves they could fix your car up for less than £200 probably.
My friend sold her Ka which needed externsive welding, had no service history, had a cracked lower wishbone arm was ten years old and a trader gave her £600 for it it had no MOT/TAX etc.

How much do you need the money, or would you rather just get rid of it ASAP?
One easy/quick option would be to put it on ebay with an honest warts-and-all description (along with its good points of course), no reserve and low starting price. Then at least you're pretty much guaranteed that someone will take it off your hands within 2 weeks at a realistic price. Might not be most cost effective though.

Hm interesting. £800 from a dealer sounds very tempting. I am not in a desperate need of the money - it's more a case of avoiding hassle!
I might ring a dealer or two and have another look at ebay!

Sounds like the dealer might be the better (ie. simpler) option if you think £800 is reasonable.

Dealers trawl eBay looking for likely motors from private sales. Put you Scenic on there and see what happens.
You'll probably get a better price than approaching a dealer yourself.

Sounds like good advice - thanks to all.
