only a month or so overdue...but dont want to give them ammo if the engine fault is something serious

Same as the other posters probably have in mind Doog, i'd be inclined to get the thing looked at for the engine noise and then decide whether to let dick turpin hold you to ransom.
If there's a problem with warranty as you're overdue, you might as well start using an indie anyway and save yourself about half that ludicrous servicing price.
As an aside, i hope all the people jumping on the Hyundai scrap wagon have researched their serving costs for their forseen period of ownership.

well its 4 years down the line and i suppose its like buying a Lexmark printer..dirt cheap but the ink is extortionate

I expect that a "major" service on almost any make of car would cost this sort of figure at a main dealer these days, it certainly has on the various cars i have owned in recent years and none of them could be classed as exotic !

2 year (major) done at Toyota on the Hilux last month.
7.5 litres engine oil and filter, diff oil changed, brake strip and clean (didn't change fluid as too clean to worry this time), fuel filter, air filter, usual inspection levels etc.
£278.
Beggars belief how any dealer can justify that price on a small car.

Most manufacturers will still honour the warranty if a service is slightly overdue, say 500 miles or up to a month, but anything more than that and they will probably reject a claim.

I have missed one of my services. What happens now?
Hyundai allow 600 miles or one month either side of the expected service date. If the service is not carried out within this time then the vehicle's warranty may be affected.

well im just over a month out
its the piston slap thats the issue, if its an engine rebuild and not covered by warranty ive had it. (its not uncommon on these apparently) I guess im thinking that if i let them rip me off for this service they will look favourably on the engine noise/ warranty issue.

To be honest, i think that this will be your best chance of getting a warranty claim accepted if there is a problem.
i know you said that there aren't any other Hyundai dealers near to you, but it might be worth getting a quote from another couple as prices can vary vastly between them and i have always found that my local dealer will always price match the cheapest one.
Hope it works out ok for you anyway.

A friend of mine paid that for a 4 year, 50,000 service and an MOT (no faults) on his Zafira 1.6 petrol at an independent. He thought it quite expensive (Thames Valley so add 20%!) but when I told him I paid £270 to a main dealer for a 2 year service on a Picanto a couple of years ago he didn't feel quite so bad. 5 or 7 year warranty? - excellent stuff - 5 to 7 years of main dealer servicing?

Personally if I had a car with an issue and a warranty that was affected by getting my car serviced on time, i'd get it serviced on time......
Can you print other reports of piston slap on the Getz to use as leverage when they come up with the old "not heard of this one before sir" line.

A bit of an update here:
I contacted the 'next' nearest Hyundai dealer (just happens to be in the next County) but distance not too much of a problem, and got a quote of £220 for same service!!!!
Discussed the warranty Issue and was assured that with the mileage on the vehicle (32k) it wouldnt be an Issue.
Im happy to go with £220 plus peace of mind on the warranty issue.

Excellent Doog. thats more like it, heck of difference between the two.
Keep us updated on the engine situation please.

I know it's not very helpful, but the annual service on my BMW M3 used to cost around 250 Euros at the main dealer.
