Hello
My car is a 52 reg Renault Scenic 1.9 dci, 112k and does not have a turbo.
I was driving yesterday and suddenly when diesel engine revved up to it max, I took me foot of the accelerator and still the engine revved, to turned the ignition off, but still the engine revved. I had to stall it to stop the engine. I towed the car home and topped up the oil and water, I started the car OK, but there is a continuous stream of white smoke, again the engine revved to its max. The EGR valve is ok open and closes correctly. There are no oil or water leaks visible. Have you any ideas of what could be causing the problem?

Sounds as though it was running engine oil mist, this will cause it to run away and the only way you can stop it is the way you did. Its normaly associated with advanced wear causing blow by past the pistons. Could be a fault with your crank case ventelation system.
The only other possibility I can think of is neat diesel getting into the engine somehow, that could account for the white smoke.

A Too much oil causing overrun.
Q does not have a turbo.
There has to be a story there, don't be shy what happened?

Can also be caused by collapse of pipe between air cleaner and manifold.

Sounds like a lot of diesel going into that engine.......unasked for.
