Regardless of the warranty, the dealer has to warrant the goods as fit for purpose for six months under the Sale of Good Act, and in court a judge would find in favour of the buyer of a three -year old car, despite the 100k on the clock, I think.
Time to get Trading Standards involved, and then a solicitor.

if its definately $3000 to fully repair i would offer 50/50 to the cost ie each pays $1500
if this wasnt acceptable to the customer i would withdraw my offer and tell him to see me in court
who in their right mind would buy a 100,000 miler diesel vauxhall anyway

Plenty of people. Chances are the engine's not been broken in yet.

but i never mentioned the engine
its the bit that hangs on the end of it
i got a 3000 mile zafira to go into meltdown last year so help us all at 100,000 miles

No immediate plans to do so bb, or indeed any medium to long term ones either for that matter.....
But are Vauxhalls particularly bad at staying the pace of mileage in your experience ?
Just curious to have an inside take on that really given my tight walleted penchant for wringing every last mile out of my cars !

I would suggest she gets independent advice- the AA or RAC, they could help.
Have the car checked by an automatic gearbox specialist.
100,000 miles is a lot but I believe the engine/gearbox should be good for a lot more, as usual depends on how it has been used and maintained. Ordinary cars can give great service over a long time- if looked after.

Couple of things from me -
why take it to Vauxhall, when the independent can probably do the job for a little over a grand or so (£325 for an 06 17k gearbox from an auction site, so even with 10hours fitting time and a few odds and sods it shouldn't be much over a grand at cost price)
Could a gearbox specialist not repair it?
As an aside, as the driver of a Dec 08, 23K vectra it feels more like a 223K car, I dread to think what it will be like at 50k!

oldnotbold is correct..
2 months and failed gearbox = money back or FREE repair.
Period. No argument. It's the law.
