The Alfa Romeo’ 166 has come out as the worst depreciating car in the UK, retaining 14.4 per cent of its original price after three years.

Cars from the ex Rover and MG factory, such as the 45/ZS and 75/ZT, fare little better, holding on to 20 per cent of their values over the same period.

Also models from quite a few other manufacturers feature in the bottom 10 - including Proton, Mitsubishi and Nissan - and none of these achieves a residual value better than 25 per cent.

All from glasses of the values of all three-year-old cars available in the UK - over 6,500 model ranges in total.

That a 3 or 4 y/o Alfa 166 would be a bargain?

I was in one a couple of years back, as an airport taxi (not in the UK!), and it was memorable for being such a good looking and quiet car.

You'd have to have been slightly barking or totally unconcerned about depreciation to buy one new though as this car was obviously going to lose a big %age.

I'm not sure about those numbers for the 166 which was over £29k when new so now should be £4k I had a look for some at the price and they are older than 06, I saw a 55 plate £10k on AT. Very low on numbers up for so had to gauge prices.

Sooty you are looking at it as someone looking for a willing buyer - dealers aren't willing buyers of Alfa 166s, they don't want them and Glasses reflect this.

Buy that car for £10k and drive it into the local dealer for a trade in price - you'll probably be offered 4k for it!

and I thought Kia's / Hyundai's would be at the bottom of the list.

Maybe but a 6k mark up is too much, I think you would get more than that as a trade in if they were than putting it up for 10k.

Nobody would pay £10k for it though that is the point. The dealer also needs to get rid of it quick otherwise it take 6 months to sell loosing another £1k in the process.

Maybe I'm being really dense here, but, why would they try and sell it for 10kish(which dealers are) if no-one would pay even close to that, which the report is suggesting?

to answer your question sooty a lot of people cant value cars, you can put a price in any old thing and if it matches their budget they will aspire to buy it,
as mr T would say---the fools

when i worked in the trade my sales manager always offered at least £1k below glass's book value for an alfa. the dealership just didnt want them and would rather the customer sell it private. always came as a shock to people as a few years ago the 147 was quite popular and at 3 or 4 years old people may have expected to get perhaps £4k or more as a trade in price and they were slighty annoyed when we came back at £2 or £3k!

Alfas, charismatic, brilliant to drive but financially disastrous. My 164 cost me a fortune, gave me lots of pleasure but, sadly, was traded in for £500 against a Vectra B estate. That was about 12 years ago, I'm still driving Vectras( late models now) and the depreciation on trade ins in acceptable.

Enough of this talk of de-preciating assets I say! How's about playing it smart with an a-preciating asset?

what a heap
brings back memories of fitting metric tyres to the things and you could never cure bead leaks because the rubber was too thick

He will be lucky to get anything like £2k for it. Why do people not realise that just because a car is rare it dosn't mean its worth anything? I am sure a Perudua Nippa is one of the rarest cars in the roads but its worthless.

phoarrrrr having owned 4 of them when I was younger and used to buy them for a couple of hundred quid for a years motoring, I know all about Montegos. And only the best Montego Turbo would ever be worth anything aproximating £2k.

£2k for that - he's having a Turkish, surely?
