When I bought my 3 year old Jazz, last year, I was pleased to see that I was getting consistently 53 mpg, according to the onboard computer. Subsequently this has steadily decreased and is now only 39 mpg. Neither my pattern of driving, or the fuel I burn (mainly Shell standard unleaded) have changed. So what could account for the deterioration in economy?

Has the car been serviced recently? I noticed a big drop in my Colts MPG after a service, its returning to normal now after a month. Not exactly sure why this happened as haven't noticed it before.

I read your post with great interest as my Jazz [2 months old] has started doing the same thing.
It did very well right from the start, easily achieving 50 mpg. Over this last week the fuel gauge has dropped a lot more than usual. I even opened the bonnet today quite prepared to see a fuel leak.
I will re-fuel soon and then I will see what it is doing.
Otherwise it is running fine but on 3 occasions recently the engine has rattled on start-up from cold. Not sure if this is connected.

PS- this is a mark 1 Jazz not the new shape.

The car has been serviced recently, but the mpg was going down before that, although since it is mainly the wife's car, I have not tracked the declining mpg in detail. The engine seems to be running smoothly and quietly. Good idea about the brakes - I will check if they are getting over hot.

Brakes binding?

Have you tried resetting the mpg computer when you fill up, the mpg computer normally goes up if you drive on the motorway, check and see if your tyres are at the correct air pressure, they do affect the mpg, different style of driving can also affect the mpg computer so does stop and start driving, did you get your car serviced with honda dealers, sometimes they do a ecu upgrade when it is needed
