Matra rancho, based on the simca 1100.
|
It's a Renault 7, a mark 1 five with a boot. Made in Spain, I've seen a few in Majorca and one over here in Blighty.
Always wanted one, had loads of Mk 1 fives...and sixes....great, comfy little cars.
Renault 3 was a smaller engined 4...built for cheaper tax purposes in France. One running over here in Renault Club.
I have a 1972 Renault 4 van fitted with a sierra 1100 engine.. very rare now in UK, most rusted away.
Ted....Renault Classic Car Club.

Rats! beaten to it, though it is a Matra Simca Rancho to be pedantic. And I believe Lulu had one. Not many people know that. Fewer still care!

im pretty certain the engine was bigger than 1100
im sure they only did 1300 or was it 1500 only
|
I think the engine was the notoriously rattly 1442cc OHV unit also used in the Chrysler/ Talbot Alpine and Horizon.
|
|
You are right, the Rancho was powered by the 1442 cc, 80 bhp version of the Simca Type 315 straight-4 engine. Many other components came from the Simca 1100 parts bin.

probably not, under current 'elf and safety rules :-(
BTW - there are/were some pretty big cars run in your part of the world.

Matra-Simca Rancho if it was 1977-1979, or Talbot Matro Rancho if it was 1980-1984.

Very good, hope that was from memory.
My overiding memory of them was they had a chassis of tin foil and were very difficult to weld up for the mot due to all the glass fibre
i always thought they looked like a mini range rover till they were started up and you heard the distinctive french tappet rattle
Anyone remember the sweety jar radiator expansion bottles under the hood?

What was the Matra three abreast sports car called?

What was the Matra three abreast sports car called?
There were 2. The Bagheera in the 70s, which was made of paper, and the Murena in the 80s which was made of slightly thicker paper. I think they also used the rattly 1442cc engine. Nice styling though.

I don't recall the Murena, I used to see 3 Bagheeras parked at the same address in the late 80s / early 90s

Some lovely rose tinted reporting in that link.
A mate of mine had one for a while in the late 80s. To be really honest I can't remember if it was a Bagheera or a Murena, but I do remember the really dire build quality, the bits of trim falling off, the cracks in the bodywork, the starting problems and the MOT failure due to a rusted chassis at which point he got rid of it.
