Hello
Wonder if anyone can give me any clues on a few minor issues.
Firstly when pulling away in 1st gear the power bottoms out unless I really over rev it?
I've never owned a Diesel before so don't know what to expect, but it definately doesn't feel normal to me. Also is there any way of testing the turbo? There doesn't seem to be much pick up in the usual range when it should kick in, it just kind of caries on (with other diesels I have driven there is a definate whoosh when it kicks in, but it could just be that this particular model doesn't have much oomph?)
Secondly just today the power steering seems slightly heavier than usual, and doesn't kick in until a 5-10 seconds after starting.
Lastly, when I step hard on the brakes there is a grinding sound and feeling. Have had both wheels off and the brake pads are fine (they also sailed through an MOT). What could this be?
Any help will be hugely appreciated

PS Just quickly do you need to replace the whole unit if the mirror gets smashed? Some idiot bumped it while it was parked, the casing is fine but the glass is gone.
And where is the best place to get replacement badges (chavvy kids have nicked the rear badge... what on earth for I can't imagine. It's a vauxhall!)

Has it got ABS?

Further to my earlier post, the PAS has now failed completely, and the battery light is staying.
I don't think it has ABS.

I am pretty sure an 04 Astra would have ABS as standard?
|
Has it got conventional PAS driven off an auxiliary belt that also drives the alternator?
If this has got very loose, it could give the PAS and ignition light symptons you describe.

power steering is dependant on a good charge/output from the alternator (electric power steering, a electric motor drives a hydralic pump) if it is not chargeing then you wont have power steering full stop, the power from modern turbo motors are a much smoother affair nowadays that said there may be a problem possible mass air flow meter problembut you will need to get the electric's sorted first,Regards TB

Only if the car was registered after 1st July 2004.
Easiest way to tell is by seeing if you have an ABS check light that comes on when you first turn the ignition key.

There is no ABS light and the car is Jan 04 registered (so its the old shape).
Checked the belt and its tight so not that. Also the PAS is now working again for the time being, and the battery light has gone off again, so the problem seems fairly intermittant.
Any further ideas would be appreciated. Are there line filters on the PAS system that could get blocked and cause this kind of problem?

The Club and LS will have ABS as standard. The Envoy will only have it as an option.
I would get the MAF checked by a garage. Live data readings should see about 30 kg/h on an idling warm engine, rising to a couple of hundred kg/h above 3000 rpm. A stopped engine will read vitually nothing.
Replacement badges are best bought from a Vauxhall dealer.
Mirrors can be replaced separately, as long as no clips etc are broken?

The Opelise shop on Ebay is pretty good for most Vauxhall / Opel / Holden badges tinyurl.com/dxbngs
