passat tdi in for service today at local garage and they reckon both back calipers need changing .only done 45k but they reckon they are seized and dont want to rewind to fit new pads ,might have a look myself and just wondered what the normal procedure should be or any tips to free them off
as usual thanks for any replies

If this car is fitted with electric handbrake, then a special procedure is reqd for installation of new pads .hth

thanks but no its not electronic handbrake ,I deliberately avoided that
I just thought it odd that both had seized and thought I should have a look myself

I don't know the Passat rear brakes but have experience of rear disc brakes.
I would be surprised if the pistons had seized. You have nothing to lose in buying a "cube" to wind back the pistons, you will soon find out if they are seized when you try this.
I can't give you full instructions as to how you wind back the pistons, I just hope you have a good mechanical grounding.
If anything is seized it will be the pads within the calliper. This calls for new pads, a thorough cleaning up of the callipers and careful use of copper grease when you re-asemble.

The Mk2 Golf was notorious for seized callipers, better on the Mk3 after a re-design. Easier if off the car (clamp the hose and put some clingfilm over the master cylinder and put back on the cap first. Apply a little brake fluid around the piston seal to act as a lubricant. Ideally using a wind back tool (Halfords) try and move the piston back and forth a few times (about 1.4 inch at a time) to break the seal on the piston. Then screw the piston in. I have had success with a wide file placed in the piston slot or a piece of metal (garden chair reinforcement!) in the slot. Check the rubber "bellows" for pin holes or renew (part of a rebuild kit from VW at about £15) and make sure the pins move freely (take out, clean and re-grease). Reassemble with new pads, bleed, and operate the handbrake a few times.
