Afternoon all
Yesterday afternoon (sat 21st) I was motoring eastbound on the M180 and in the process of overtaking saw maybe too late a mobile camera van on top of one of the police patrol vehicles only mounds.
The back windows were open so I guess it was in action. I estimate my speed to be between 75 and 80 mph measured by GPS.
Are the police allowed to do this as I saw no warning signs apart from at the bridge repair roadworks several miles earlier and am I likely to be recieving a ticket?
Thanks.

Of course they are. If you were doing a true 80mph then there is every chance you will be done as you were speeding. But you're likely to be offered a fixed penalty so it would only be £60 fine and three points.

Taking into account speedo error. Speed seminar option maybe from 78 MPH. Not sure what the upper limit is.

Think I drove past the same van going westbound earlier the same afternoon. A ticket might be borderline, and I don't think Humberside Police does speed awareness seminars. I have been through such a check (I wasn't driving) at almost 80 going into Grimsby and no penalty was issued. Yet a neighbour was doing 34mph in Scartho Grimsby and got a ticket.

WE should stop calling them speed cameras and refer to them as mobuile revenue raisng devices. I expect to be 'done ' in the near future as most folks I know seem to have picked up the odd 34 in a 30 type ticket.

I think they do - www.humbersidesafetycameras.com/about-safety-camer.../
I'm sure the building where I did my "bikesafe" half day was normally used for the courses judging by all te posters on the walls.
p.s. I'm sure the M180 must be the quietest but most patrolled motorway in the country!

I wouldn't worry until something lands on your doormat - if anything comes of it at all. Are you sure that it was a speed camera van rather than an ANPR camera van?
|
I know that motorway fairly well, it is is a very quiet motorway and is mainly straight and flat so you could easily do speeds of 100mph down there so in this case I don'[t think they are revenue machines, I think they are there to stop all the people doing 100mph in their BMWs.

''straight and flat so you could easily do speeds of 100mph'' Thats what make a mockery of speed limits IMO, if its safe to, then why not be able to?
there's parts of the M40 for instance where 70mph is bordering on the suicidal, but its legal!

It's definitely a speed camara van. I speak from bitter experience having being done by it twice (85mph, £60 and three points both times) in a period of three months about 4 years ago. It's one of their favourite spots and must rake it quite a bit of cash.
If you were over you'll get a brown envelope in the post with a return address in Beverley in the next week or so.

... but if you were only doing 75 to 80 according to your clock you may well be under. Prepare yourself psychologically for the Buff Bombshell, but don't eat your heart out in advance, capisce?

Lud he said he was doing 75//80 measured by gps?

I was driving SWMBOs bmw 118d at the time 85mph on the speedo = 79mph on the tom tom on the level. at the time of the incident i was doing 80 to 85 on the speedo. cant say exactly as I was slowing down at the time!.
I agree its a bit crafty to site one there and I`ll wait and see if the brown envelope appears!
Ta for the replies and if your on this motorway watch out!

well it will do it you dont see it the second time despite being done by it the first time.

They only raise revenue if a: you speed and b: you get caught doing it.

So you a: speed? and b: dont look where you are going?

This is not to be relied on and only works after testing but on routes I know I find satnav is very handy for this, because I have programmed at to beep if I go over the limit even slightly, luckily I never do this but it is handy. As usual if you rely on this you will be caught out and old fashioned observation is the best to avoid speeding tickets.
Times have changed, I am not going into a debate about speeding but if you do have a habbit of going over the limit all the time you are likel;y to get caught.

Evening all
Apologies for reviving an old thread but just to close it no nip has arrived so it appears I wasn`t going fast enough to get one phew!. Please be careful if your on the M180 as it seems it may be the most patrolled motorway we have.
Thanks for the replies and happy motoring!

So, more luck than judgement, the operator may have been setting up, packing up or on a doughnut break. I think I will stick with judgement, (and cruise control).

Make sure you are reading over 100 next time you see one redafour. That way you won't get us all worked up for nothing.
