Discs rust after standing for a while. I notice that, when setting off in my Hyundai i30 after a day or two without use, and before braking, there is a rubbing noise. This intensifies on braking but then, after an application or two, disappears. This leads me to believe that the pads are in constant light contact with the discs. Is this normal?

Nowadays brake pads are knocked away from the disc by lateral runout of the discs when they are rotating. There is no pad retraction mechanism such as there used to be on early Dunlop disc brakes. If you have the brakes applied when the car comes to rest the pads will remain in light contact with the discs until the car starts moving again. What you're experiencing is normal.

As the snail said - perfectly normal, I get this on my Audi A4 as well, exactly as you describe.

This explains the Dunlop piston/pad retraction mechanism. tinyurl.com/bz2cxd
My first job in the automotive industry was with Dunlop.

Very informative. Thanks.

After I've washed my car (and got the brake discs wet) I leave it in gear (in the garage) with the handbrake off to allow the parts of the discs covered by the pads to dry quicker to minimise corrosion.

Why not drive round the block, or a few hundred yards and brake a couple of times to warm and dry the disks?

What I do is easier. And once my car's in the garage I switch on my dehumidifier to dry it totally.

For you maybe, but what about the good lady snail's lower back pain.

We have two dehumidifiers, one permanently in the garage and one in the living quarters. I'm investigating a colour-coded shopping trolley with alloy wheels, low-profile tyres, and leather-covered handle to assist her in lugging it about. I will not let her get the better of me!

Blimey! Rare to find someone who uses a garage to keep a car in!
I can see a new thread coming here..................

I pride myself in not being your average run-of-the-mill motorist!

Maybe not as rare as you think, I use the garage to keep a car. I also run a dehumidifier in the garage 24/7 in the Autumn/Winter/Spring.
