1987 2.5 Transmission Brake - Kildrummy

My transmission brake has seized on. In the last week the brake has seized on a few times but came off after moving my 90 back and forward. This time it has stayed on and will not come off.

The handbrake cable and linkage appear to be working ok and the problem appears to be inside the drum.

I had started to remove the prop shaft to try and get the drum off but put that plan on hold in the hope some of you folks have some experience of this

Any thoughts?.

Hi Kildrummy it sounds like it has been left too long before being adjusted or the handbrake shoes are worn right down and the little rollers have stuck at the end of the travel or maybe just need cleaning and lubricating
slacken the adjuster on the back of the drum a bit then give the drum a good smack with a dead hammer or put a bit of wood against the drum and hit that and it might come free ,this should either let you get the drum off or screw the adjuster back in to lock the drum then back it off untill the drum turns ok and the handbrake works although I would reckon you would be better stripping and cleaning it and checking shoes etc
are you actually at Kildrummy ? I pass there a lot

Thank you very much for your response. I will be giving that a go tomorrow and yes I am at Kildrummy.
I will update with my efforts tomorrow or Tuesday.

I should also have said that you sometimes can push the cable back in to the backplate a little way to help free it off and often freeing it then doing adjustments will be fine .
if you dismantle it be carefull how the expander bits come apart as it is very easy to put the bits in the wrong way round which gives the same problem as you have now

If the vehicle has spent any time 'wading' its possible the friction material may have come off the shoe and has jammed itself behind the other shoe. locking it.
Good luck.

The only "Wading" I have been doing recently was in really deep snow two or three weeks ago. I wouldn't think the deep snow would cause this problem but it was just after the snow storms we had that this happened.

Thanks

My Defender is the older one where the cable connects to a bracket the side of the gearbox and a rod from the bottom of the linkage operates the expander. I haven't been able to get back to it but I will this coming weekend.

Thanks again.

I have tried to slacken the adjuster and failed. It is not moving at all and feels solid.

I suppose I should take the prop shaft off and see if I can get the drum off but I know that is going to be a bit of problem with the brake jammed on. I will report back with my findings.

see if you can gently tap the operating lever back in a little bit in to the backplate to free it and make it easier to take the drum off ,sounds like it has come to the end of its travel and stuck there and if it was pulled on when it was hot then contracted it could be well stuck
the adjuster should turn anticlockwise to slacken it off if thats any help to you

OK, the problem is solved. I took off the prop shaft and expected to have a huge problem getting the drum off but, the retaining screws were quite slack and as soon as I started hammering the drum to get it over the brake shoes it gave way and the shoes released. The drum slid off with no problem. The shoes, however are badly worn, down to the rivets in fact. So I think I have found the cause of the problem. I will stop using the hand brake until the new shoes are fitted.

Thanks to everybody who responded.
