Hi,
Having had a few largish bills for my old Laguna 1 in succession,I decided i would get rid and invest in a toyota as the trade tell me they are 'bulletproof'.So i bought a 05 Corolla Automatic...seemed like a good idea....big mistake!
Although the Laguna is a much older design car,the level of comfort and refinement is way above that of the Corolla.Despite being a low mileage, fsh example i find the engine/gearbox very noisy at PARK or low revs, although the box is very smooth.Tyre noise from the front is,in my opinion, excessive. My wife has an old clio auto which is considerably quieter at 70mph!
I understand we are talking about different sectors of car here, down sizing hasn't worked for me!Good news is i didn,t sell the Laguna and bangernomics suddenly appears to be a good option.
Has anybody here managed to run a Laguna 1 to high mileage without massive expense?
Thanks...Phil.

You're comparing apples and pears. The point is surely whether the Corolla has hit you with any big bills like the Laguna.
My FiL had an older Laguna, he finally got rid after the fuel tank fell out as the straps had rusted through. This was after multiple electrical gremlins. He now drives a Yaris and is very happy.

Hi nick,
Yes,apples and pears. As i said i understand we are talking about two different sizes/sectors of cars and i was hoping that the gap had narrowed in terms of refinement. If this Corolla is an example,i feel not.
As for big bills, dont know because i,ve only had it a short while. They seem to have a good reputation, although i have some reservations that i won't bore you with!!
I was talking to a very experienced person in the car trade recently, who agreed with my
comments on the Corolla and suggested that the nearest car he could think of to the Laguna would be a Citroen C5!
By the way i have had no electrical probs with the Laguna?!

I seem to recall if you switch brands of tyre this makes a big difference. Past posts suggested Michelins ........... I think ... but check yourself ... Dunlops are very noisy ... Whats tyres do you have fitted.
i find the engine/gearbox very noisy at PARK or low revs,
have you checked the inlet manifold .. these rattle if broken ... blip the throttle gently with your ear close to the inlet manifold .. if it rattles then its broken up inside ... can be pricy to fix if warranty expired !!
Apart from said fault the Corolla will be chweaper to run than a Laguna.
We sell about 250 Corolla's a year and never seem to have a problem with them however any Laguna we are tempted to resell ALWAYS fails a workshop inspection as it costs many hundreds to bring up to scratch.

It has original Michelin Energies all round having only done 14,000mls.
The inlet manifold does'nt seem to rattle but if you blip the throttle the air intake is quite
loud.
When the car is in D or R or P and stationary, there is a noticeable ticking noise which goes when you move on.
All this is probably quite normal for this car but certainly not what i expected.
Thanks....Phil
